He didn't exactly win in an awesome way. But that is cycling. Never really liked, nor disliked him and my opinion wont really cahnge about him as a cyclist.... Ok, I think he is a ****

I don't get why pretending you are feeling bad when you are feeling good is so often described on here as "smart".

Its the oldest trick in the book. Children know how to tell lies like that when they are 3. They did tests where they put a cake in front of 4 year olds put a camera in the room, ask the kids not to touch the cake then after the kid touches the cake, they come back and ask the kid "did you touch the cake" to which the kid always replies "no", unaware that the camera has caught them in the lie.

Thats about the same level of sophistication as saying "oh noes i feel so bad, you must pull", and then screwing that person out of their medal, 5 minutes later.

So who was smarter then Costa? He bided his time and followed others until the right moment. Then attacked, got a gap on Valverde and Nibali, soloed up to Purito, and beat him in the sprint.

Okay, if we're talking overall plans for the final then I agree the Spanish duo's plan was definitely the smartest. Individually though, I would consider Costa the smartest rider in the final.

Edit: On second thought, indiviually would consider Purito and Costa about equal.

Well he did, if just Valverde could have followed Costa on the flat. Tactically, Purito rode the perfect race in the final.

The underdog must ride like that, not like VanMarcke against Cancellara in Roubaix 2013. That's honorable, but who won Roubaix? Cancellara.

What's the point to help Nibali and Valverde? That way he would lose for sure ( he was suffering while climbing), winning comes first for a rider, not riding "beautifully" or with panache.
Those things are great and make the sport awesome, but I know being the world champion is more important than "put on a show".

He wasn't lucky and he isn't a coward, more like a winner like the classification shows, he knew Nibali was the favorite ( so the pressure was on him ) and had the responsibility to win at home with the whole italian team on his back ( Portugal's team was Machado and Cardoso... ), after so much talk ( saying Vuelta was not the priority and the Worlds where) and doing the course recognition so many times with his team.

Rui Costa 26. That's a underdog for sure, unless you have more credibility than bookies all around the world and cycling critics/fans.

He was the weakest of the four, this was shown uphill. It's the reason the Spaniards focused on Nibali and Nibali on the Spaniards. If Costa had worked more, he wouldn't have won. That would be socialistic (and thus stupid)...

This was his only way to win and he took it. What the future will bring, who knows, this WC is in the bag.
