The Hitch said:I don't get why pretending you are feeling bad when you are feeling good is so often described on here as "smart".
Its the oldest trick in the book. Children know how to tell lies like that when they are 3. They did tests where they put a cake in front of 4 year olds put a camera in the room, ask the kids not to touch the cake then after the kid touches the cake, they come back and ask the kid "did you touch the cake" to which the kid always replies "no", unaware that the camera has caught them in the lie.
Thats about the same level of sophistication as saying "oh noes i feel so bad, you must pull", and then screwing that person out of their medal, 5 minutes later.
Afrank said:So who was smarter then Costa? He bided his time and followed others until the right moment. Then attacked, got a gap on Valverde and Nibali, soloed up to Purito, and beat him in the sprint.
The Hitch said:Purito was smarter. He told Valverde exactly what to do to guarantee gold for Spain.
The fact that Valverde didnt do it, does not take away any points from Murito for forging the correct plan.
If Purito had been smart, he'd have ensured that Valverde would've won.The Hitch said:Purito was smarter. He told Valverde exactly what to do to guarantee gold for Spain.

In the end Spain lost.
Vino attacks everyone said:He didn't exactly win in an awesome way. But that is cycling.

hrotha said:Yeah, Costa ruined Nibali's chances more than anybody else's. And Nibali was clearly not happy with that. The guy's a leech.
When he finally took that one "pull" (and I use that word loosely) I wanted to punch him so hard.
He's smart, I'll give you that. Like an evil CEO, or a supervillain.

He always rides like this regardless of the opposition anyway. And if Nibali hadn't been so stubborn, Costa's cowardice would have cost him even a medal. He was lucky.
Cooperating with a rider who shares your short-term goals isn't helping them, it's racing.

Hugo87 said:He wasn't lucky and he isn't a coward, more like a winner like the classification shows, he knew Nibali was the favorite ( so the pressure was on him ) and had the responsibility to win at home with the whole italian team on his back ( Portugal's team was Machado and Cardoso... ), after so much talk ( saying Vuelta was not the priority and the Worlds where) and doing the course recognition so many times with his team.
You checked the odds before the race?
Rui Costa 26. That's a underdog for sure, unless you have more credibility than bookies all around the world and cycling critics/fans.
But it's your choice to keep hating on Costa.
