Swift going backwards in the sprint there. Looked too easy for Gatto.

Felling maybe could have done something but was too far back.

Feel a bit sorry for Ben Swift because I think his focus has been misplaced over all these years. He's a sprinter by name only.

If only Swift and Nizzolo raced each other in a sprint would neither of them win?

Realistically Nizzolo would win...
Nah, Marcato would suddenly appear out of nowhere to take away the glory! :D
Those guys would probably find a way to loose a sprint against Pozzovivo. :D

Need to watch it again in slow mo but watching live I thought Swift may have slipped a pedal 50 yards out...

What do you think his focus should have been, though? He was never going to win bunch sprints against the best guys so turning yourself into a rider who can climb well with a decent sprint isn't exactly the worst idea in the world, especially given how many stages tend to favour those types of riders these days. He really should be beating Gatto in a sprint though and it looks like he messed it up at the end. His positioning has always been poor in the sprints unfortunately. He's like a striker in football who is desperate for a goal (win) after a long drought and once he does a few more will follow.

One thing about Swift: He hasn't improved at all in his career. He's still the same guy he was at Katusha.

Injuries have really hurt his progress in recent seasons to be fair to him. Basically every time he crashes he breaks his collarbone and he's admitted himself that he's lacking confidence. I dare say a move away from Sky might be a good idea. Away from the spotlight and pressure of Sky it would be easier for him to rebuild and find his confidence.

He's not exactly a bad rider. That Pais Vasco win in 2014 was extremely impressive and he has a podium in a monument.

EDIT - He also had a brilliant solo win at Coppi Bartali last season.

I remember in MSR last year, just before the final turn, he was in the top 10 positions. The turn comes. He's dragged all the way back to something like 30th and loses his chance at a repeat podium.

I agree - but who would guarantee him a protected role in worthwhile races? AG2R maybe?

It's insane to think he'd be better off away from Sky, He gets the highest quality support of any terrible sprinter in the history of terrible sprinters. The amount of work Sky does for him is absolutely incredible.

ITT today. Kiryienka is an obvious pick here, but there are more decent time trialists here: Coppel, Kelderman, Chavanel, Van Garderen. Also interesting to see if Poels will do another crazy TT. This one doesn't have as much of a climb in it as the Valencia one, so I don't think he can win it, but he's clearly improved in the discipline. In any case, today's result should set us up nicely for tomorrow's MTF finish.

Swift is a good rider everything a side, anyone who gets involved in a though conditions MSR can ride even if not a pure sprinter in sprints

As a swede I'm hoping for a good performance by the Ludvigsson brothers today. Tobias "should" be top 10 at least.
