Welcome to the 21st century people. Communism in Russia is gone, there is no Berlin Wall, yadayadayada. Russia is no longer a "freakish faraway land". It's essentially part of Europe now regardless of any geographic technicalities. And this still has nothing to do with cycling.

Even Albania is easier to enter. Imo you're only really part of europe if they drop their ridiculous visa fees so Russian and European people can easily travel...

You're definitely right that Popovych never lived up to his potential, but how much of this was because of him being a "bust"? I think a lot of the reason for his failure to repeat the results of the beginning of his career is just that for one reason or another, he has chosen to use his talents as a domestique rather than a team leader. He has signed with teams where he knows he will be working for a leader in the GTs. Don't see how that makes him happy, but apparently it does.

And maybe Popovych was eating more than serials for breakfast when he was younger, but has changed his diet now...

I doubt that Sagan could ever catch up with what Gilbert will do in his career. Gilbert has some amazing results already and he's just at the beginning of the normal peak years for a cyclist. If he continues in the same way in the next four years it will be almost impossible to better him. Some riders will probably get similar palmares but to predict at age 20-21 that a riders will do that is impossible.

Considering the teams he's ridden for and his results, it's kind of weird that he doesn't seem to be on any special diet right now. It's certainly not because Bruyneel has encouraged him to eat healthy or because Popovych would have an ethical problem with a more aggressive diet. Maybe he just can't be bothered anymore? Or is someone taking a close look at the food he's buying and eating, and he feels it's better to eat normal stuff until that someone stops looking?

:D:D yes,i get it...Nibali is for me only contender for wining Giro,ah sure...maybe Ricardo...but its realistic Kreuziger for Top 3 Scarponi,Menchov,Anton are on higher level then Kreuziger, but he will get good team support ;)

Nibali? On that course. No way. Scarponi is the big favourite atm imo.

Pfft, Scarponi, can't even follow Gilbert on a little hill.

In all seriousness Kreuziger stands no chance at the Giro next year. Ricardo Ricco was better in the mountains than Contador during the 2008 Giro. And now there are almost no time trials. And he hadn't that much team support during the Giro(neither did Contador, but oh well.). Sure he was doped, but who wasn't during that Giro's top 10.

Scarponi was like MINUTES back of Ricco at the Giro of 2008.

Scarponi was like BANNED at the Giro of 2008, so of course he couldn't keep up with Riccò.

Ricco is my no1 favorite.
He will have had over a year of racing in his legs by then. post dope.
Scarponi is good, but not no1 favorite status.
