samu has only had 1 bad year. gesinks bad luck is eternal.

Maybe but Gesink got through the Vuelta fairly well. Finished in about the position I thought he would. No bones broken etc..........Maybe the gypsy curse has been lifted !

He's been pro for 6 years now, and in the last four of them, he crashed in almost every GT he's ridden(3 of 4 TdF's he started in), and in some minor races too. His dad passed away and he broke his leg in the worst way possible. I'd say he's been cursed ever since he got podium in Amstel Gold 2009. If you think Gesink's bad luck can't possibly get worse, then his sponsor quits.

You can't possibly say Samuel Sanchez is an unlucky rider. The only thing he lacks is a GT win but it's mostly due to his own limited qualities.

+1 You hit the nail (way too hard) on the head.

I think he has the qualities except for consistency. Always seems to have a day when he loses time unexpectedly. He can sprint, and climb and his TT is solid without approaching the level of a Wiggins or Contador. He has missed the boat unfortunately as far as winning a grand tour is concerned.

The main Samu's problem is probably than he is not an attacking climber. He always prefers someone to attack first. I don't remember when he tried to initiate something himself, but Prato Nevoso. Surely I'm saying about open GC fight. Luz-Ardiden and PdB is not quite such a thing. Yeah, if one reasons like me, we had 2-3 attacking climbers in total nowadays but anyways it is an an essential condition to gain the time over main contenders.

Climb, sprint, solid TT. The same as Eddy Merckx. 20 years before Samuel would be a Roberto Conti with more punch. The fact that he could be a GT winner is a shame.

@Jason Mercier: Why not? Because you don't like him or because you think he can't?

Bumping with content and speculation

content: celebration with spanish staff and team mates right after winning his gold

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=hHQyFqn5e-0#t=366s

speculation:

he looked much better towards the end of tirreno, which good considering this is his first race of the season and how early he was dropped on prato di tivo.

what will race next? Catalunya, pais vasco, romandie and then the giro?

sounds like a solid program where he could give euskaltel plenty of world tour points to be honest.

Nice video. Those two exchanges with Contador were cool to see.

I really hope he's in form for the Giro. There's no one I'd rather see win it.

Great video.

As for Samu winning anything big in the future, forgetaboutit.

Hes 35 years old. Best years of career ruined by crashes and ASO.

What do you mean by ASO ruining his career?

Only that? It's a bit of a stretch to say ASO ruined his career that day. Most likely he wouldn't have won the stage to Luz-Ardiden.

I think he can still contend in the big races though. I think he's got another 2 years in him.

First time I've seen that video and being a huge Samu fan I got a bit misty watching it. The great respect shown by Cancellara and Bettini was nice to see as was the congrats from Valverde and Contador. His Olympic wins was one of my all-time cycling viewing highlights.

Loved the announcer: "SAMU! SAMU! SAMU! SAMU! :)

Thanks to Parrulo for posting the link.:)

Samu wearing the rainbow jersey would be very awesome :) His GC days are over, now all he needs is a big classic on his palmares. He's been so close on many occasions...

All that talk about having offers, not ruling Pro Conti teams out and waiting only another 10-15 days sounds to me like he has a practically done deal with a team which isn't particularly good and he's hoping he can still find something better.

I hope a big team comes to it senses, he's still got something to offer IMO :(. Still, it would be cool if Drapac scraped some cash together, signed Samu, smashed the Asian and US circuit then scored a Vuelta invite :D

I know, it ain't gonna happen...
