“I haven’t seen anything extraordinary considering that everyone says he’s [Contador] the strongest rider in the race. He’s been collecting seconds here and there like a little ant,” Sastre told Spanish sports daily AS. “I’m like a hunter, waiting patiently for the right moment to strike. I don’t make stupid moves or get nervous. But I am attentive and if the opportunity arrives, I will take it. Just like I did in the Tour.”

Was it a close race? sure. But that doesn't make it great. If you excluded the top 100 riders in the world from the Tour, you would have a close race and somebody would win, but that wouldn't necessarily make them great.
The Tour was a bunch of top tenners looking at each other for three weeks. At least the race was won by the only guy who had the balls to make a real attack (Sastre).
The last three Tours have been a mess: Let's see 2006: A top tenner (Pereiro) is allowed to take the yellow jersey on day ten after he loses 30 minutes earlier in the race. (Joke)...2007: Top 2 are tossed for doping infractions and Cadel Evans almost wins (Joke),...2008 (see above).
The Tour this year will be a real race with the best rider winning and will be able to say that he's the best stage race rider in the World (not just the guy who was able to win the Tour de France)
uphillstruggle said:How was the tour last year a joke? from what I saw CSC rode a good tactical race (something different from the lance years) and perhaps Evans f**ked his chances a bit on the alp but more interesting than the LA years, 7 or 8 different leaders pretty good I thought.
The only thing I see different from last year is Contador and yes he will probably win, I don't think LA will make the podium at all.
I hope I am right and the young riders show Lance he is to old, if only to show that he is not some invincible freak but just a good rider who had a very good team behind him. In fact if you look at the 7 of his wins he had a team of 8 other committed domestiques, I think he may struggle with just two or three.

Like I said earlier my dislike of Armstrong is based on personal experience and not based on rumour,a friend of a friend said or any other misinformation. Sometimes I think people mistake arrogance as being confident.

Not to be disrespectfull to Sastre or Vande Velde(because I like them both), but Lance has a point! I recall thinking this Tour is a joke! There's no real champion in the bunch and everybody seems to wait someone else to take action, not risking anything! Actually the're was only one memorabil move in the whole Tour(in the GC competition) was CSC's bluff and Sastres attack on Du'Hez! Even the commentator(who was anti Lance) said "Sadly, Lance would tear them apart even at the age of 36" that summed up last years edition...
I undesrtand Sastres anger! Lance diminished his victory, but still it was better than in 2006!

Back to the topic at hand, yes last year was weaker. There are arguments that it was cleaner and there are arguments that ASO kept the strongest riders out of the race. They are both valid.
mr. tibbs said:First bold: I agree! Cyclingnews is a LOT better than Velonews when it comes to this. I remember when the showergate scandal broke Velonews' story was not about the report that got leaked but about Armstrong's Twitter reactions to the report.
Second bold: Kind of agree, but mostly I want to point out how stupid it is that Contador, Kloden, Leipheimer, Zubeldia, and Horner are all on the same team. So lame. Dudes should be riding against each other (officially). And now that they have this Armstrong fellow I've been hearing so much about... Just ridiculous.
And last year's Tour: I LOVED it. I haven't enjoyed a Tour so much for a long time. Mr. Armstrong can keep his serious business; I'll take the joke.
