He's still a bit iffy on whether he really wants to be a protected rider. I do think he can follow wheels to a top 10 in most GTs, and surely he can improve his ITT. But he's always said he doesn't want that responsibility. I think he'd need to go to a team like Trek to get a fair shot; JV already knows (or have a opinion) what he can and can't do.An interview with Sepp Kuss in Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.

On top of that they had Dumoulin under contract until this year as well (at least when he was active). He was likely on the same pay grade as the other two.

Terrible crash for Kuss!! Not only dropping out of the top 10 but potentially harming his Vuelta campaign. It’s good he was able to finish but hopefully he doesn’t have a concussion.

I'm honestly a bit bummed nobody on the team waited for him. And I don't mean immediately, but once they got dropped on Petit Ballon and were never gonna be any use to Vingegaard.

He missed the Top 10 by 11 minutes, I guess they could have pushed him up the mountain Pinot 2018 Giro style, but his GC bid was over as soon as he was dropped the first time after his crash.

Red Rick didn’t mean to help save his top 10 but just ride in solidarity and to help Kuss. It’s easier to ride with friends after a nasty crash and you’re in pain then by yourself.

How about DVB and Laporte, they finished three minutes ahead of Kuss.
Kuss description.. All in a day's work.. and people who have got cuts on your head,soft,moist, hot skin..in the hairline out of the hairline.. Even a tiny cut looks like you took a grenade.. He is a good racer, and for the team, it takes lots to rattle the guy..

Don't know about LaPorte but Van Baarle only dropped from the yellow jersey group mid way up the next to last climb, so he would have been well ahead of Kuss at that point.

In an interview Kuss said that CRs, I think tubeless, tire blew out and so no chance to avoid and he went over the bars.
