I think it was a mistake to have him stay high in GC. He could have rolled home with the gruppetto in the opening weekend and stages 10 and 12.

So we'll probably see Kuss in the Giro next year, as their GC leader. But don't tell anyone!

He's still a bit iffy on whether he really wants to be a protected rider. I do think he can follow wheels to a top 10 in most GTs, and surely he can improve his ITT. But he's always said he doesn't want that responsibility. I think he'd need to go to a team like Trek to get a fair shot; JV already knows (or have a opinion) what he can and can't do.

Of course the top riders are taking a disproportionate share of that. Vinge, Rog, Wva must get 7 figures. I would wager Benoot, Laporte, Van Baarle come next, because you see their faces all year long. I don't think Kuss is really getting paid that much.

On top of that they had Dumoulin under contract until this year as well (at least when he was active). He was likely on the same pay grade as the other two.

I'm honestly a bit bummed nobody on the team waited for him. And I don't mean immediately, but once they got dropped on Petit Ballon and were never gonna be any use to Vingegaard.

He missed the Top 10 by 11 minutes, I guess they could have pushed him up the mountain Pinot 2018 Giro style, but his GC bid was over as soon as he was dropped the first time after his crash.

Red Rick didn’t mean to help save his top 10 but just ride in solidarity and to help Kuss. It’s easier to ride with friends after a nasty crash and you’re in pain then by yourself.

Don't know about LaPorte but Van Baarle only dropped from the yellow jersey group mid way up the next to last climb, so he would have been well ahead of Kuss at that point.

According to CR himself, his crash was triggered by a broken spoke that made the rim go untrue.
