How about you wise up to the fact armstrong is stronger than last year when he finished third and this year he has the full support of a strong team.

By all accounts he had the full support of the team last year (save one man).

Podium at tour de suisse means nothing to you? Schleck couldnt even get over the climbs at tour of california...cant wait until you sheepishly disappear when armstrong shows you why he has won the tour 7 times.

It doesn't mean a thing more than the other 6 people ahead of him coming into the final TT were TERRIBLE against the clock. Dude finished 11th. Not first. Not second. Not third. 11th. Five seconds in front of Frank Schleck. 1'09" down on the eventual winner.

stronger or not , he wont see the podium this year, and face it if the team was so strong why not be at the front on stage 3 helping saxo drive, and i dont mean 1 gregario i mean team, as in all.........also why let a rival team dictate tactics if you planned all along to make stage 3 count and put some time in the bank, i seem to remember lance using the word "carnage" , oh wait that could not have been a tactical blunder on johans or lances part......🙄

The biggest fail here is you for starting this incredibly dumb thread. If you call a punctrue a dismal failure then you need to try another sport. If Cadel had punctured at the same time LA did who would he have had to tow him back on??? Oh thats right nobody because all the BMC boys had been dropped.🙄

Even the most rabid anti lance posters haven't bothered with this thread because they realise the stupidity of your assertion and know that on the pave sh!t can happen to anyone at any time, just like it did to Chavanel, Rogers, Frank and a number of others.

Nonsense, they knew that Saxo would be the strongest team on that stage and that it would be controlled by Cancellara and the other Saxo strongmen. Yes they were hoping to put time into AC but as I predicted that probably wasn't going to happen with Vino shepherding him. RS is a team of climbers not a team of pave riders. Putting time into AC would have been what they were hoping for but with the good weather, no wind and an unfortunate puncture it didn't happen. Not a failure, just racing. Also it is stupid to talk of failure this early in the race. You could better argue that the day was a failure for Saxobank because they lost,if not their strongest GC contender then his crucial right hand man.

I've gotta say this is biblical payback for throwing the challenge at Saxo and Astana. They talked large and came in small: when LA can't outride a 125lb newbie like Conta on the cobbles and the rest of the team was trailing him that's evidence they never had the strength to be a part of their own strategy. 1. Radioshack failed because they lost time to Alberto Contador and their plans epically failed.

2. If you watch the vision and open your eyes BMC kept Cadel in position and kept him right up the front. That is the reason he made the split. Hincapie punctured as he would of been up the front anyway. lance was too far back and was going backwards. BMC weren't dropped as they did there job. Radioshack screwed up big time and failed. Yes they did not have much luck but they could of recovered better. Cancellara put the hammer down before the crash and Radioshack were already going backwards.

I would like to say that yesterday in dutch tour program "avondetappe" in the night, Steegmans said there's a big fuss/fight going on with radioshack after the cobble stage and there were still discussions going on inside the team the next morning. Steegmans didn't tell what it was exatcly about but it's sure Lance is mad at his team and he's really feeling the pressure...

Well, if the majority of your team appears to get flats you can see that there is some sort of failure on the side of the team management or the riders, either not the correct equipment or too much riding in the gutter. The first is mainly a problem of the management, the latter is more of a failure from the riders. If you ride in the gutter you'll get more mechanicals. Also the fact that Armstrong had only one teammate left, when prior they said they would ride as a team and that they would take time on Contador can be considered a failure, this due to fact that you'll have no possibility of both getting a wheel from another rider and having someone to guide you back to the front.

I myself found it unrealistic before that RS would take time on Contador, as their team really does not have many cobblestone riders, the biggest failure of the team in my mind was not taking Steegmans along

I find it interesting that Steegmans is even talking about it. In every LA/Hog team, "what happens in the bus, stays in the bus" has ALWAYS been a steadfast rule (as in team sports where internal conflicts in the locker room are never shared with the media)

Not wanting to read too much into it, but is the very fact that Steegmans is talking about stuff that should "stay in the family" also a sign of this internal turmoil?

It's no secret that Steegmans was very diappointed at being left off the Tour squad, especially after riding so hard (and well) for LA in Switzerland. As this Velonation article points out, Gert's presence would have been a strong plus in this first week in classics country.

But will the big Belgian’s absence leave the team exposed as the Tour crosses the classics country and 13.2km of cobbles on stage 3? Along with the mountains and the long time trial, these much-feared roads, the terrain of the Paris-Roubaix, have been identified as potentially some of the most decisive kilometres in the race.

“You need obviously a well-rounded team,” Armstrong added, “but I think you have to take some big guys who can definitely support you in that first week because with the cobble sections you have to be in the front. I remember we did those sections in 2004 and I had great support from Ekimov and Hincapie. We came in the cobble zones first. It makes a big difference.”Even without Steegmans RadioShack still has the team to guide Armstrong through though, says Demol. “Gert was the ideal rider to pilot Lance across the cobblestones,” he conceded, “but [Yaroslav] Popovych has the same capabilities; and [Grégory] Rast and [Dmitriy] Muravyev also know their way around the cobblestones.”
