Shimano on keeping factory chain lube on the chain...

Clean the chain before is gets too dirty or dry.
Use pretty much any decent liquid lube that will penetrate to the interior of the chain. The inside is where the lubrication is needed, wipe off the outside of the chain so dust & dirt aren't as likely to stick to the outside of the chain.

WD-40 is NOT a good lube, it is primarily a Water Displacer that is good for preventing rust on steel.

Those days were just a couple weeks ago for me :D The wax-ers still exist!
