Man you guys are uptight, it was just a fun little experiment, innovation rarely works out, especially in my case, I don't own a machine shop or anything. Aerobars, carbon fiber, electronic shifting, the derailleur for goodness sake, all these and many more things were once just ideas in someone's head which took a decent amount of time to perfect and went solidly against the "established order". I hope you didn't show up at NAHBS this past weekend, you may have had a heart attack with all the random stuff going on. My seat was just a random thought experiment that I wondered about the race legality, especially given tri's laxity on the rules. I don't ride it anymore, but it did seem to solve some problems while creating a good deal more, oh well, that was my Saturday a few months ago.

You of all people, living in Boulder, should be able to comprehend that a lot of triathletes around here can haul *** in all the sports they participate in. I stopped being a single sporter because I like the variety, aside from the elitism in cycling that is at once comical and extremely annoying. I just don't understand why some of you feel the need to berade the sport, its speaks more to your insecurities than any stereotypes you're trying to further, it was my understanding that we are much more similar than different. If you want to do a ride around Boulder, all you have to do is ask. I can usually be seen riding up left hand in the afternoon on my "frankenbike" - the mtn bike you guys also made fun of (which I get an extraodinary amount of people actually riding with me to compliment it), but that will be retired after this week since the temps and road conditions are better - its a winter bike.

I'm a cyclist, but I also do triathlons sometimes. I moved cities a while ago, and didn't know anyone in the new city to train with, so I started riding with the local tri club. I run with them and swim with them too and that is fine (except now that I have read about what they do in pools maybe it isn't so fine...) but I have stopped riding with them. Every now and then in a dangerous situation someone in a bunch of cyclists will call out to warn the others about a car approaching from behind. These guys were the first bunch I have ridden with who felt it was necessary to call cars coming from in front...

I got a laugh from this post on ST:

Saw "That Guy" at a local half mary this weekend. Middle aged, Bald, decked out in full skin tight tri kit, with compression arm sleeves and low cut socks strategically placed so as to make sure the IM tattoos on shoulder and ankle were on full display :)
I have read several posts on ST describing this specimen and was excited to spot one for myself :)

In answer to the OP..

No. Or at least they should be banned from my road club. They've started turning up in droves. Training rides are now a complete nightmare

There's also a large dichotomy in terms of triathletes as a group themselves, we make fun of "those triathletes" a lot on ST, the guys with major dollars, not much experience in any sport, with the IM tats, showing off. Check out one of the IM tattoo threads, they get pretty funny. A lot of us "true" triathletes can run 5ks in the 15s, pull FTPs in the mid 300s, and swim a 500 in the 5s, and you would have no idea we were triathletes unless we told you, we're just strong in every sport. I would never get an IM tat, or tat in general for that matter. Those guys are still out there making an effort, respect for that, given how much of this country is overweight or obese, but they do make for some comical stereotypes.

anyone putting out the effort should not be marginalized, but they are going to be poked fun at and ribbed a lot. but all in good fun. at the pub we are all just folks. :)

Oh, brother. A new ST classic. Noisy hubs slow you down.

Is anyone aware of rolling resistance data of wheels build on "noisy" freehubs (eg Chris King) in comparison to relatively silent freehubs (eg DA)? And I think the type of bearing material should be the same for a valid comparison. I did a quick search of ST threads, but didn't come up with anything specific to freehubs based on noise level when coasting.

No shlt. I had to overhaul a Zipp rear hub for a triathlete last fall. Discovered that it was missing a pawl so told him and was going to replace it. He told me not to as it creates too much drag.
That story is no lie

He either has his saddle on backwards or is wearing a fifth compression sock that is way too tight.

The saddle and helmet are on correctly then - everything else is backwards. :)

Sleeveless and arm warmers?

Compression socks? Another pair of black socks over the compression socks?

what is that little (leather-looking) strap on his forehead? Is he wearing that helmet backwards?

So many questions...

And is he trying to take a particularly painful dump during the descent?

As mentioned way earlier in this thread, The sleeveless and arm-warmers look is hot on some tri chicks however, I will give them that.

1) Yes.

2) Looks like it.

3) The back of his helmet so...

4) Yes.

I think it is a fake/set-up. No-one would really do all that.....would they?

Once could be argued as careless or set up.
Twice and maybe we have a bit of a trend happening.
Three times it's pretty clear, backwards helmets just go faster.

It's even official US team strategy apparently.

I don't have confirmation that this was a triathlete, but I did get this off Slowtwitch from a guy who works at a tri shop:

We had a guy come in the other day carrying his bike with a "mechanical emergency"

He had dropped his chain and didn't know how to put it back on the chain rings.
