Looks like this thread has touched a nerve. I won't stop to wonder why.

I do an occasional triathlon. Since I am a crappy swimmer, I get the experience of coming out of the water with the people who are liable to drown then passing a jillion people on the bike. Every tri I see funny stuff.

Someone needs to get off the tri bars, stop staring at his front wheel, and get a sense of humor.

We need a bike cam on your bike so you could have N more posts to add with pictures and video's, nothing beats proof ;)

Who nevertheless enjoys trashing triathletes, many of whom are also crazy fit and are also runners

Here's a basic thing that tri-trashers here don't seem to quite comprehend. Bike racing and triathlon are different sports - with different rules and different skill sets. You all know this on some level, because you want to keep tri-geeks (as you call them) out of your exclusive club by ridiculing them, and at the same time you continue to trash them for not being part of your club and for not playing by your rules and standards.

This has to be the most ironic thread at cyclingnews, and it should be renamed as such: on and on endless drivel about "self-important" triathletes, and yet the slowtwitch "researchers" here exhibit nothing but the very same thing they condemn.

All that time researching food for your ridicule machine - good lord, enroll in a class or something. Take a MOOC, or bone up on some skills at your local community college. Learn a programming language. Learn to crochet. Something.

As someone else said, you might consider embracing anyone who is out on the road trying to stay fit, no matter how ungainly it seems to your hyper sensibilities. If you want to unite people, maybe start a thread about aggressive motorists. There's something all cyclists could get behind and relate to.

Or not, peace out.

You are assuming a lot. I used to race Tri's full time. Ran Div 1 Cross country and raced my bike in Europe. Took many sports related classes in college and I am that guy that talks to anyone on a bike.

Funny thing is I have several close friends who are current, and former, Pro Tri geeks. They are WAY harsher then I am on what they see. The attitude sickens them. Was riding with one friend who was top 3 at Kona twice and he was complaining about the geeks ......"They don't even drink!"

Now how about you, how many times have you caused a crash in a group ride because you were down on your TT bars?

I have done a few triathlons.. there are some great people in the sport, but the nature of it tends to attract a lot of obsession & self obsession.

If you want to know why threads like this exist, go hang out at registration of an Ironman event.

I have a dark past in Triathlon, too. It was often the husband and wife Ironman pairs who went over the top with obsession. Obsession is understandable (necessary?) at the top of the sport, but the middle-of-the-pack age goupers who just lived for the sport were just a little wierd. I know because I was one of them.

It gets really funny when one of them takes up triathlon then decides it is their lfe's goal to qualify for Kona. The amount of time and money spent by someone whose only chance in hell of qualifiying is if lightning killed the top ten people in their age group can be astounding. Every upcoming race is going to be the one where forty minutes gets magically cut from their usual four plus hour marathon time.

A neighbor who we got into cycling was recently corrupted by some Tri people.

Apparently every thing we recommended to her was "wrong"

Road bike no good for training became need tri specific bike only

Seat height was too low = raise it up hips tipping/ rocking on tip toes

Cadence too high (we were wrong again) big ring slow cadence reduce heart rate to last save energy for run.

She was told to stay in the aero position all the time to get used to it.

Oh and the slime tubes are the call for race day

So I asked about the approach to her first iron man: I guess it all about saving energy

So like if she dog-paddles the swim, reduces cadence to a minimum and walks the run she will finish is about what they are saying. real training there

Let's just call this group Lie La Vie

I hope she doesn't flat

Actually it's more like Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
I admit I also raced some :))
Who's next?
My GF (a reformed tri girl - now a sub 3hr marathon runner ) is nudging me to have a go at Mandurah 1/2 as I've never done a tri before. The cycling is fine (still racing Elite A grade) and I can run thanks to playing soccer on and off since 7yo and 6 years in the army and I grew up by the beach in the Northern Rivers of NSW so swimming isn't an issue.

I have to confess that I'm tempted!!!

Consumed by the Dark Side, he was. Once you head down that path, forever will you be consumed by it...

Not everyone can be saved, despite the numbers above having been saved.

After admitting my past mistakes, I received a six month retroactive ban and am now a stalwart anti-triathlon advocate.

I look forward to the release of your upcoming autobiography: "A Tri in the Dark"

And if I can look a bit goofy on all this, I've also partaken in a tri-series for one season. It was fun , but ultimately the riding took over. My penetence I was confined to the forests and MTB for a few years before coming back to the tarmac

I think you are taking some of those Slowtwitch threads a little too seriously. The one on snot bombs was pure gold!

This thread is the gift that that keeps on giving

The preview box for the five subforums truncates the title to "Should triathetes be allowed" :D

i think we all know the answer to that.

Testing and hanging round dual carriageways with other middle aged dudes who shave their legs is as close as I have got.

Time better spent .....if you

choose to get away from all the super athletes and participate in something much more fun.

Rather then start the day with a swim and then go to a distance skating event followed by burlap bag hopping over 500 meters followed by pairs burlap bag jumping for style points, followed by a bike ride , followed by a run , followed by hand stand walking for another 500 meters followed by crawling in mud under barb wire fence , followed by rowing across the channel followed by long distance jumping . How about something much more civilized.

I suggest to drop all that modern in excess activity and join the retro ronde

see the link below and enjoy, somehow life made sense at one time.

Serious question because I love and respect you all;

If I entered and trained for a small Tri with my wife would I be a dou_che? I would only use drop bars..yo

As long as you maintain a look of disdain towards you fellow competitors at all times you should be fine.

And be careful at the turn around point - triathletes have no idea what an apex is.

If you don't mind allowing me to be serious for a bit.

Watching this picture and seeing Vanessa Fernandes racing with the number 1 makes me sad.

She was no tri geek, daughter of a former winner of the Volta a Portugal and total beast on the bike where she could destroy her rivals if needed, not the case usually as she was also the strongest runner most of the times, she was dominating the sport until she got struck by massive injuries which lead to depression and anorexia :(

She will never be back to his old level i guess, despite only being 26/27, as she has been out for 3 years now. A shame she didn't get the win in Beijing as i am sure it would have made her "early retirement" much easier to cope with for her.
