I don't know this guy but based on his shirt and the background, I think this pic was taken only a few hundred yards from my parents' house. There are a lot of serious athlete types living nearby - long distance swimmers, ultramarathoners etc., who are pretty much all lovely people.

The only tri guys I've ever got any attitude from have been cocky Aussies ("So, how many triathlons have you done? What, none? Ya big ****tah!"). My first and only love is the bike, but I'd consider doing a triathlon one day for the laugh, although I'm a terrible swimmer since I broke my elbow cycling. I might want to ride a dublinbike/citibike/velib though, to make it interesting like.

This guy looks more like a pro Bull Rider than a, er....try-athlete.
So are they still allowed to ride bikes? I haven't checked in lately.

He either has his saddle on backwards or is wearing a fifth compression sock that is way too tight.

LOL!!
5TH compression sock

yes I live in Boulder..
No I am not an immature or arrogant fool that guffaws at people...I am usually the first one to welcome someone into a local ride...

but I will laugh at this thread...even contribute.

I'm glad that there are people who are so good at every sport that they can transfer to TRI and enjoy trouncing everyone else...You know who you are..
just genetically gifted folks I guess...

I run as well as cycle...I have done so most of my life
..I know how to swim but am not good :p

for me Triathlons seem very contrived and many many people that do them are so damned seriously into themselves, their training and their equipment..and they want the whole world to know it

maybe a few roadies like that around here but WAY more TRI geeks abound.

How many stickers on cars list mileage that road cyclists ride??
"I ride Super James" or "Super Flag"....
"I did Carter Lake Today "....

I have never seen any of those. If I do then I will laugh. They'll probably be right next to someone's 10K or 26.2 sticker on a back window.

What I really want to see is someone with century tattoo. That would be hilarious.

To be fair, it is not just Tri geeks. I did the Time Sport Megeve today. In general the quality of rider was high, except for descending, that is still pathetic.

There was a turn around on the top of the final climb. Some guy went down trying to negotiate it.....and then lay there wiggling because his foot was still stuck in his pedal. I had to turn away.

Triathletes in a group ride. One rider completely takes out another. Road rash and a wrecked carbon frame.

"Sorry man, I did not hear you riding there".

In a group ride ... a hard group ride.

True story.

Don't mix the streams. Group rides with road bikes and tri bikes are fun and games until someone takes a bullhorn brake lever to the elbow. I am not sure how this sort of thing happens.

Link to nasty picture

That is nasty. Couple years ago customer of mine who is sub 10hr IM, crashes while in the arm rests, armrests break and she tears up her forearm pretty bad, did not finish race. But, she then brings me the bike to fix and it is still all covered with her blood.

seen that before. in the aerobars no less crossing wheels hands far from brake levers in the big ring at a low cadence.. any time I get a Tri guy on my wheel or anywhere near me I just ease off and let them go. even in a group. I'd rather push air on my own all day than ride next to someone who cant stop or steer their bike.

My GF (a reformed tri girl - now a sub 3hr marathon runner ) is nudging me to have a go at Mandurah 1/2 as I've never done a tri before. The cycling is fine (still racing Elite A grade) and I can run thanks to playing soccer on and off since 7yo and 6 years in the army and I grew up by the beach in the Northern Rivers of NSW so swimming isn't an issue.

I have to confess that I'm tempted!!!

I say go for it, but you have to wear boardshorts and use a roadbike (better yet a cross-bike) and run in an old grungy T-shirt - all the while beating the guys in their tri-specific getups.

I've entered :p

I'm under strict instructions to only use my road bike, without aerobars and to be seen visibly laughing at every TT Bike with Aero helmet I pass :D

Do MTB shorts count? Boardies might get a little chafey after 90kms...

Turn away because he was lame and you were ashamed or broken leg?

Agreed, Jimmy Seears worked at my LBS when I lived in Brisbane and was a semi - regular on fast bunch rides and had no issues at all keeping up with NRS/Conti guys. He's a beast on the bike and has switched from ITU to non drafting racing to take advantage.

At the pro level, when guys like like Macca, Chris Lieto and Normann Stadler started upping the stakes on the bike (Macca in particular) top level tri guys really had to take the bike seriously or perish.

No coincidence that Alexander and Jacobs won Kona in '11 and '12 after doing massive bike work following Macca's ambush in '10.

If only it filtered down to your average level Tri geek

There is one thing that has filtered down and that is the equipment. I was waiting for the bus this sunday and witnessed the local triathlon taking place or at least i saw a part of the bikepart by chance.

One thing i can conclude is that the swim time is not inversaly proportional to the cost of the bike equipment. But thats probably just an error of my equation because the bike price tends towards infinitely even in the lower ranks.

Yes ... no stopping no steering in a group ride is bad news.

I especially like the sole use of hearing to know if someone is beside or behind you. I can only guess how likely this fella is to get smoked by a car.
