robbie likes the camera, mic and the sound of his own voice
perfect combination for a commentator

extreme Australian bias would prevail
humorous though

Anyone know where Robbie went?
I found him quite enjoyable on the Orica Greenedge Backstage Pass episodes. He had character and wasn't afraid to show it.
As for Jens, ease up on the hate. We're all aware of his background, even if he chooses to keep quiet about it.
Seems I'm in the minority, but I like his contributions to Le Tour commentary.

Robbie is co hosting the SBS feed and is providing some specialist commentary and interviews. I think he's not bad and far better than Tomolaris (who is improving a bit).

Their commentary is quite Aus biased but the level of knowledge here is not like continental Europe or even the USA.

most modern devices have volume adjustment

you can also change channel

i used to watch rugby matches live on tv with the volume turned off as the commentators were poor

the radio was far superior so i would put the transistor radio on top of the tv and listen to that commentary instead

an excellent alternative in those circumstances

would jens and robbie make a nice duo
unlikely

I liked Robbie v. Didn't mean to imply different. In fact his short lived fan segments were good. Just thinking of a spot for the so called fan favorite.

I see Jens unbuttoned his polo. Maybe he is reading.

Remember when Frankie struggled and suddenly his commentary followed a broadcasting 101 draft script?

Jens is really struggling with the formal format they must have coached. Ie. Intro topic. Support topic. Restate both to conclude.

"I case you out dere wit not so much experience in professional cycling are wondering why team BMC has a helmet dat not so much matching deir uniform. Well da team wit da yellow helmet is da team wit da fastest time. BMC have da yellow because dey are da fastest team at da moment. that's why dey wear da yellow helmet......"

Not oh boy can't wait for his description of the echelon.

Put this dude in his lederhosen and give him a pint and a brat and make him dance at the top of alpe d'huez so at least it's,watchable.

I remember him dropping out of the break in the 2004 Tour specifically to chase down Ullrich who went kamikaze trying to regain time and towed the chasers the entire way back. He still stayed with the lead group (with Basso, LA, Sastre, Landis, Mancebo, Kloeden, Rubiera etc) and then took another turn for Basso, dropping most of the climbers, when Basso told Jens he wanted to go for the stage win. Jens was monstrous that Tour.

And this is the payout for all that work coupled with his "charm."

I have the misfortune of watching the American production of the race feed at the moment. As soon as I figured out it was Jens, I was hopeful he'd unstupid Phil and Paul, but ohhhh no. It's just horrible.

I think I mangled the quotes, but, I think you'll get the point.

Phil asks Jens the same question every time " will the break away succeed " Jens reply's the same thing " no it won't "
Phil then ignores Jens and talks about a river or castle and Paul kicks in with the good stuff. Superb TV :D

Paul really should do a BBC documentary on the French chateaus. I really do love a bit of history "seriously" it would be very good.

best example of that was Plateau de Belle - at 12 minutes Jens still believed that the break would be caught... hilarious that the break got home by just over 7 minutes

once upon a time

phil liggett

was quite good

that was quite a while ago though

he makes a lot of mistakes

which indicates that he's either not really following the race

or
losing his marbles
he was better at commentating skiing - Alberto Tomba was his original man-crush before LA

Pre Armstrong they were quite good, then they sold their souls...
Okay, I'll buy that. I guess I didn't mind Phil so much back then. For me it's the blatant miscues and ridiculous bromances with certain riders that makes me gag when he speaks nowadays. Maybe he's (Phil) just losing it??

They do play well off of one another and always have. That's something that can't be taught..

Did anyone see the moment when there was the Guy on the bike on a high wire as the tour rode past.
Phil made a joke/quip to Jens about it ...who then ignored Phil completely and started going on about how the break wont succeed...Classic Jens :D

Phil was never good. In the 80s they teamed him with notable cycling experts like John Tesh, Al Trautwig and Sam Posey. It made Phil look like a god of cycling knowledge in comparison and help build the myth, at least in North America, that he was the defacto voice of cycling. Reality was he's always done the same line for line commentary, it just got more obviously ridiculous over the top under Voldemort's spell.
