Someone missing from this thread is Jurgen Van den Broeck. He got back on his bike and rode with 3 broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade, and a collapsed lung. No, he didn't make it to the finish, but he still got back on his bike. Most people with those injuries wouldn't have gotten up off the road until a stretcher arrived, and he got on his bike and rode...not far, but still...

Chris Horner got up and rode 25K to the finish while dodging pink elephants and unicorns. BAMF!

Tyler Hamilton rode the TDF and came 4th overall with a fractured collarbone. Even with the help of certain products, that is still a good effort.

That is Hoogerland's father on the right.

A hero, heir to Voigt or Vino for sure - I was already thinking as much during the Giro.

Personally I found it a lot harder to watch repeats of his summersault through the air than the picture of his bloodied *rse; but what I found especially disturbing was the podium scene. I don't think he was 'overcome with emotion', as the cyclingnews piece said: I think he was in shock - a medical condition for which he should have been getting attention. OK, perhaps he wouldn’t have wanted not to miss the podium thing, and I'm sure he got some attention soon after, but on the other hand I think they could have handled it better.

I thought too that it was a bit cruel to make him stand on the podium when he was in pain and chock. They probably meant well though.

Apparently Hoogerland's dad received the 'pole' that broke Johnny's fall; he said that it might have saved his life. In case you are interested in TdF memorabilia, they are thinking about auctioning it off for charity. Source
