Awful news. Next thing in a ghastly season for injuries and accidents. I remember his first TdF in 2007 when he broke away on the Galibier and won KoM. Loved to watch him and I thought that we were seeing a great new talent, but he's been so unlucky with injuries.

I really hope that he makes a full recovery.

“The news today is good," commented Alfredo Zuñiga, Movistar Team's doctor. "Mauricio is still at the ICU and his progress is being favourable. The cerebral edema, which is the most worrying thing, has gone through a slight improvement and that's why we have to stay optimistic, even though we have to keep reservations because recovery in such processes is unpredictable. The 48-72 hours following the accident are crucial, but the first hours, which are even more critical, have been got over by him. The progress of his neumotorax has been good, too. He also has multiple injuries and fractures, but the thing the doctors are more focused on now is the edema. He's being cared for by the best of hands and the attention by all people working at the Hospital St. Gallen is being phenomenal."

News seems to be a little better this morning. Really, really hope his condition continues to improve and he makes a full recovery. I also hope his wife gets a visa soon - must be absolutely terrible for her.

The spectator only has minor injuries. Saul Raisin was persuaded to retire but he had a very bad head injury. Not sure if Soler's will be as bad but with the run of bad luck he has had, he will maybe reassess his future. His family are probably hoping so.

He was looking good, on the comeback trail. A shame.

Poor guy, just when he was back at the top. Hard to understand how a fence could cause so much damage especially with a helmet? But a dramatic accident is always a series of things going wrong. Best of luck to him.
I guess they are going too fast + cyclists are very fragile athletes.

Remember seeing Beloki's fall in 2003. I could not believe that the fall I saw in TV caused so much damaged. I knew it was bad but not "that bad".

Beloki's crash was very disturbing to witness. For me knowing the speeds they were traveling and how he hard he was propelled into the tarmac, I knew immediately it was bad. It was pretty horrific to watch it all, hearing him screaming in pain. It still upsets me to remember all the ridicule he received when he struggled over the years to get back to the same level he was at before the crash, as if he wasn't really trying. I hope he's doing well and I pray for Soler, his family, friends and teammates. Movistar is really in need of the sport's support.

At first I didn't think Beloki's crash was that serious, but then I'm horrible judging that kind of stuff (I made some light jokes about Ayrton Senna's accident while watching that GP live on TV, and hours later I found out he was dead).

From yesterday -
The condition of the Colombian cyclist Juan Mauricio Soler continues to improve but he remains in an induced coma in hospital following his crash during the Tour of Switzerland.

There are no signs of pressure on Soler's brain and doctors have been able to reduce his medication. However, he is still being kept in a coma at a hospital in St Gallen. Soler fractured his skull and ankle after tumbling on to a spectator and then hitting a fence during stage six on Thursday.
