I believe Boonen rode a Specialized cross bike repainted as a Merckx because Merckx doesn't make a cross bike. This was during the annual charity cross event that Boonen sponsors.

Canc did pretty well on his Cervelo and will probably do pretty well on his Trek.

Contador did pretty well on his Trek and pretty well on his Specialized.

Same goes for many top riders I'm sure.

Contador did better in his Treck than his specialized, at least result wise, and specially in TTs

So was his squeaker performance in TdF '10 due to the bike change or his relative lack of form?

i was at the grand prix de Montreal..in Canada..and had a chat
with a spanish rider who has been ridding a Pinarello for 10 years...
i ask him about the bike and he told me he did not like it at all.

my 2 cents..
pro riders are like us..they feel the difference in a bike ..an prefer one from the other therefore might perform a little better...on a machine they like.
my 2 cts

A couple of years ago I had the chance to ask a newly retired Euro pro (and former winner of Paris-Roubaix) if there was significant difference between bike brands. His reply? "No, not really. Doesn't make much difference."

He looked a lot more comfortable on his Trek TT bike in my opinion. He also expressed a few times that he wasn't entirely happy about his specialized time trial bike for some reason.
