January 25, Stage 3: Estancia Grande - Mirador del Potrero 168.2km
bettiniphoto_0096428_1_full_600.jpg

Coming into the race, Contador said he didn't see himself as being a factor in the overall situation of the race because he was overweight. Overweight or not, he was still able to perform as well as he usually does on the first climbing stage of the Tour de San Luis which was a summit finish, winning it. Levi Leipheimer is also showing good form so far, being the only one that was able to follow Contador's finishing move. Looks like he's just not the usual wheelsucker everybody says he is.
The finale was something that people would have expected given the names that were on the startlist for the race. Vincenzo Nibali, Alberto Contador and Michael Ramussen were amongst the biggest names fighting it out for the win on the final climb of the day.
As for the home crowd, they had a rider to cheer for. Daniel Diaz from the San Luis Somos Todos team was also in the select group at the finish, and finished 12 seconds back on Contador.
Shocker or not? Giovanni Visconti rounded out the top 10, crossing the line 35 seconds after Alberto Contador did.

It was the time trial at the Tour de San Luis that sealed Vincenzo Niblai's 2010 victory. But given the bigger quality of the field this year, can he pull off the same feat? The Italian lies 36 seconds behind current race leader Alberto Contador who is an exceptional time trialist in his own right. Four seconds off Contador's time is the American Levi Leipheimer who is also an exceptional time trialist. Contador said he won't be a factor in the GC, but with the leaders jersey on his shoulders, will he fight in the time trial to defend it?

Former world time trial champion Bert Grabsch is also currently racing in Argentina and could be a favorite for the win. Another Omega Pharma-Quickstep rider that can possibly pull off the win is Frantisek Rabon. Native hero Mattias Medici will surely go out tomorrow and try to see how exactly he stacks up against these big names.

Why has Boonen got his arms out for 2nd place? Did he think he had the win? "Look ma! No hands!"

I saw the video of the finish, and it seemed like Boonen and Chicchi were sprinting against each other. I guess seeing as how they see themselves as the fastest guys there, they knew that either one would win. But like in stage 1, it was a close finish, and probably Boonen didn't know Chicchi got the win over him, and thought Chicchi was raising his arms in celebration of Boonen's victory.

How good is Brazilian team Funvic-Pindamonhangaba? Aside from being a mouthful to pronounce. they have to be invited to the top American race that it can do (Tour of Utah, Battenkill, Gila, Elk Grove), but whether or not they wish to do them all that is.

No chance to see them outside of Argentina, Uruguay and Brasil.

I've never seen them in anything, so I can't really say. Aren't Brazilians mostly sprinters?

Leipheimer Snags Lead from El Pistolero
bettiniphoto_0096573_1_full_600.jpg

With his stage victory yesterday atop the Mirador del Potrero de los Funes, Alberto Contador was the new leader of the Tour de San Luis. But his time in the leader's jersey was short-lived as a day later, American Levi Leipheimer put in a powering ride in today's 19.5km time trial, winning the stage over one minute ahead of Alberto Contador. Levi has now given his Omega Pharma-Quickstep team it's third victory in the same race, on top of Francesco Chicchi's two victories in the first two stages. Also, each time an Omega Pharma-Quickstep rider has won, he's always pulled on the leader's jersey after the stage.

January 27, Stage 5: La Toma - Merlo (Mirador del Sol) 160.6km

bettiniphoto_0096727_1_full_600.jpg

Contador once again won atop a summit in the Tour de San Luis. The win came just two days after he won on the Mirador del Potrero de los Funes. He only won five seconds ahead of race leader Levi Leipheimer, which wasn't enough to take back the lead from him. With the following two stages most likely to finish in sprints, it seems like Levi Leipheimer has the overall all wrapped up.

Daniel Diaz from San Luis Somos Todos is showing some great performances in the mountains, being one of the riders that is able to hang with the big boys. And he's 23.
