and could provide a bit of entertainment before going back for the last monument of the season.

One of the Sparkassen sponsor the race. How many different Sparkassen are there? I do not know.

Anyway as the last few winners show, we are talking a few minutes of action at the end most likely:

I know the German scene is a total disaster area over the last few years and we should want as many races protected as possible, but races like this don't help anybody.

I think the amateur races are the more interesting part, just spiced up a bit with elite cyclists doing a sprint for the spectators

Apart from Henninger Turm and early GP Schwarzwald (that one did not seem to have a deep field though) I can't really recall any decent 1-day races in Germany.

Apart from Henninger Turm and early GP Schwarzwald (that one did not seem to have a deep field though) I can't really recall any decent 1-day races in Germany.

Henninger Turm was (still is) a quality race. In terms of top level racing you're right, although the Rund um Köln has plenty of potential to be an interesting rouleur's race if they didn't add the extra circuits of the flat finishing loop. There used to be some good races in the DDR, the Rund um Berlin was pretty tough with all the rough roads, Kopfsteinpflaster and Plattenwege and the Großer Sachsenpreis looks like it was a killer.

One of the Sparkassen sponsor the race. How many different Sparkassen are there? I do not know.

There are 422 different Sparkassen in Germany at the moment according to wikipedia. As they are mainly based on local or regional entities they are quite small, but also robust. And play an important role in sponsoring sport events. The sadly defunct Sachsen-Tour or Hessen-Rundfahrt have been sponsored by the regional Sparkasse as well.
