Froome will be very happy about those Isle of Man tax leaks a few weeks back.

Anthony Joshua seems to be favourite: not sure what his tax arrangements are. Those who are fans of Hamilton will ignore issues about the plane on IoM just as easily as those inclined to vote for Froome will ignore his Monaco address.

But just how many votes can be mustered among the British speed skating community?

Only in so far as personality leads to popularity.

The title is, I presume, partly avoiding gender specific language, and partly acknowledging that you can't directly compare achievements in different sports.

A popularity contest, decided by votes to premium rate numbers on the night of the show.

I'm amazed about how little known Froome is in England. They only seem to know Wiggins and the track champions. In "Pointless" only 8 Britains in 100 recognized him on photo. He's much better known on the continent than in his own country.

He came straight after Wiggins, who got all the milestones and is a lot more verbal, rarely sets foot in GB, and boringly wins events in a sport GB intrinsically barely cares about.

I wonder how many fucks they'd give about Andy Murray if Wimbledon wasn't a thing

Exactly this, Wiggins is still a ridiculously popular figure with the British public, he appeared on A League Of Their Own panel show a few weeks ago and got a huge reception from the audience, Froome just doesn't carry that popularity amongst the casual sporting fan.

Yes I thought to write something about the irony of potentially a tax-dodging story stopping the guy you'd normally expect to win, when the potential beneficiary doesn't even pretend to bother with UK tax. But I didn't. And anyway I'd forgotten about Anthony Joshua, and also Adam Peaty who was absolutely immense this summer.

Normally Hamilton wins this easily. If the private jet thing stays in the mind of the general public then for me it's Joshua or Peaty with Farah coming into the mix if he gets given a good montage in the TV show. This year will be the only time Froome is even a potential candidate, but he's somewhat hindered by the fact that nobody likes him.

I wouldn't say no-one likes him. I'd say they are at best indifferent and most likely unaware of him.

Not really. It's about how well you've done in the past year. It's a popular vote so it helps if you're either a media darling or have a brash personality so you're on the front pages, or both. Froome fails to tick either of those boxes so I doubt he'll win.

Editors/Presenters of Sunday's show will have some interesting choices to make.

Froome was 3rd favourite at 7/1: amazingly has only moved out to 6th in the betting at 33/1 or 40/1

Without yesterday’s news I’d have said he would have had a great shout of being in the top 3, he’s got absolutely no chance now. He wouldn’t have beaten Joshua or Hamilton anyway.

Don't be like that. Keep believing! If you believe, the Sky is twice the limit!

If they didn't care about the positive to this point, they didn't care enough about Froome for SPOTY anyway.

I wouldn't be so sure. The UK public have a mischievous sense of humour when it comes to public votes.

Added to this, there's still lots and lots of sympathy and messages of support for him on some social media sites.

Then there's his campaign to get the asthma sufferers on side and win a few new friends.

I think most of those rushing to condemn him now already had their suspicions and were unlikely to vote for him anyway.

Sympathy votes, mischief makers and a few new friends...

So not saying he's going to win, never thought he was in the first place. But his chances might just have gone up!

Froome does deserve a Nomination clearly. An amazing season but as usual, cycling isnt the most famous in Britain and he doesnt have Olympic Gold which as a British athlete is the greatest honor.
I have just voted for Froomey, great year for him and his loyal domestiques. The guy is innocent of the doping allegations until it is proven in an appropriate forum or court.

I've hardly heard of any of them. French sportsmen must be shite. It was ok to be rude and dismissive of peoples achievements discussing uk spoty so I assume this is ok as well?

At least four of them are outstanding leaders in their respective sport (Fourcade, Riner, Ogier, Karabatic), others are world champions.

Ahh, that hilarious Danish sense of humour I've heard so much about. How cutting, how pithy, That's me right put in my place.
I was being facetious, get a grip.
