This is pretty basic racing tactics - domestiques chase down stronger riders all the time. Quintana has to pace his effort over 50km, Poels doesn't so can go harder. Because if Quintana would have followed Nibali, Froome and Poels would have chased the break down hard all the way up the last two climbs. Certainly wouldn't have let the gap grow out to 2 minutes. Quintana would have been hung out to dry.
