To be honest, it looked like AC could have taken 50/50 in turns at the front and still have won. He just wanted to be 110% sure, that he wasn't gonna crack. It's called defense

Gifting a stage win is generally a positive thing, not gifting a stage is NOT a bad thing. This is a race, now if you want to give away a stage out of respect/friendship/whatever kudos, but when people start nagging about someone actually trying to win (and bare in mind, he did not attack a Froome going up at his own pace, he countered Froomes initial attack) that is just childish, and probably only comes from some major fanboys (would have done it myself if Froomey was Vino )
