Cavendish suddenly learning how to climb just a little over a month before the olympics in his home country...wonder how that happened
Could be the weight he lost. Looks like it has affected his sprint though, so even if he's there at the finish he might not win. But still, better to be there with a little less kick than to be the fastest in the world 5 minutes behind.

Cavendish beat Gilbert by 13 minutes

The brother of gilbert that is :eek:

He always trained on the flat in Liége, it's only since recently he started training on the hills. He never liked to climb in other words.

He's not the same type of rider as Phil and obviously less talented.

If you find that post funny then please share us how much money you earned when taking the bet Mark Cavendish would podium on this stage. :)

I can only base my self on past results and those showed that Mark drops like a stone on most hills. But anyway, I did make one mistake: did not take into account the competition here. Lars Boom usually gets dropped on the hills in stage races like the Tour of Belgium and the Eneco Tour(last couple of years at least) yet here he wins. Well, I'll let you make your own conclusions.

Cav was impressive he can hang on the hills.
But people saying cav will be a good domestique for wiggins in the mountains is a joke.

Indeed. Boom also said before the race that it was in his interest not to make the race too hard. Bakelandts and Hermans spiced the race up, but couldn't hold on vs a large bunch.
Boom is also working towards a peak for the national championships and usually Boom has high peaks.(good form)

Voigt on twitter:

We are on the famous" la redoute" climb and 2 of my teammates just attacked and went of the front. Of course some counterattacks behind...I try to keep them in check and its pretty sticky already, and there is 5riders just ahead of me, and then i look to side and guess what??? I see the worldchampion Marc Cavendish in his yellow jersey shifting 2gears bigger and just jumping to the counterattack, totally easy!!! I could see how Cav thought" i know i am supposed to be a sprinter, but i dont care!!" And he crossed the Hilltop in first place.

Cavendish counterattacking on la redoute and riding over the top first? Sounds legit :p

Jens Voigt has just gone on one of his twitter storytelling sessions, and this time it's about Cav attacking on La Redoute. Apparently he was pretty impressive yesterday.

The conclusion is pretty simple: both Boom and Cav had a good day in the hills.

cav earned all my admiration this year especially in the giro.
the british olympics team will be brilliant with cav that slim and fit.it will be scary

but closer to us,cav and edvald shredding the peloton at the beginning of planche de belles filles will be something insane

If Boom ever decides to lose weight again and focus on the hills he could still be big force in hilly stages and medium mountain stages. I think it's a waste he focusses so much on Roubaix

Totally agree with this, but this stage win will only convince him that putting on 3-4 kg of muscles doesn´t matter, while it clearly does :(. When he won that Vuelta stage, he basically rode everyone (including guys like LBL winner Iglinskiy, Kolobnev, Efimkin) straight off his wheel, as a first year pro. I'd really like to see Boom do such things again.
