Not a huge shock really. Tim Cook has been running the show at Apple for a while there, and quite well. The question wasn't so much "if" but "when". Jobs will remain as chairman of the board.

Jobs resigns.

Filthy capitalist.

:D

gee, haven't read the article yet but wonder if this is sort of an ominous indication. hope not, but considering his health issues.

Just curious - there's all hell going on in Libya and Syria, which seems to interest no one here except me, and which, in the grand scheme of things, is surely rather more important than the resignation of a capitalist entrepreneur, and yet Jobs resigning merits a separate topic - why exactly?

I wish anyone fighting cancer well, since I lost my wife to the disease, but for the rest, wtf should I care about Steve Jobs?

Rumors are that he has cancer, or had it and the recovery has been long, difficult and complicated. But who knows?

On the news he was quoted as admitting to having had a liver transplant. He did not say why he had the transplant. A nephew of mine had a liver transplant, but not because of cancer. The condition caused him to lose a lot of weight. Similarly, Jobs is looking pretty thin. Whatever the condition is, I'm sorry to see him, or anyone for that matter, suffer.

Sorry to hear that about your wife.

You shouldn't. He was just another worthless POS. Didn't do anything worthwhile.

I take it you're a PC, not a Mac?

Nope. Mac, iPhone-a-holic. I'd have much more respect for Jobs had he just given this technology for the betterment of humanity. Instead, what did he do?

The Ifpone has made it easy as ever to "be connected to the world", so now people don't have to talk to each other. Amazing. Superb. :S

he changed the world, he changed the way we see\use tech.

it was difficult to do that in 1900, but it is harder to do it now, the wheel is already made.

maybe i am ignorant.. however i don't know anyone that changed more the world (in a recent past) in a practical way than Mr Steve.

he made apple the world most valuable company (public stock wise), he made pixar, he started the big bang in the computer industry. what was already made, he made it much better and what wasn't made, he made it.

what jobs accomplished is much more important than libya. that situation exists simply because people are stupid and it will happen again and again and again. it's normal. jobs legacy is unique. jobs legacy makes us go faster and more comfortable in the evolution path. that's how it works: it just works.

then you have two other things.
what others were capable of do in order to survive in the tech world against jobs-- we also have to thank him that,

job's charisma. dozens of immortal answers, his vision, etc. he is a legend. he made a new religion, apple. he didn't need to make big noise about donating huge amounts of money (like someone) in order to be forgiven by past sins. he doesn't care about be loved by the general public and because of that, he is loved. some ignorant (in the subject) may think that he was just an egocentric maniac capitalist--to those, make a little research.

I agree with c&cfan.

To me Jobs may not be Gandhi, but he changed the world for the better, and without stomping on the backs of many people in the process. Why some people can't separate good guys like Jobs (or Bill Gates for that matter) from bad guys like Kenneth Lay or Bernie Madoff is beyond me.

i may be young but i am not a kid. there is a select group of people that i learned to admire and unlike 99,9% of 20year old men\girls, that group of people isn't made from football\baseball\basketball\hockey players and pop singers (even if i consider michael jackson a deserved superstar).

in the recent past i informed myself about his life, what he (Steve Jobs) accomplished, his ideals, etc. i can't help it. I have to admire him. I have to look at his talent and vision and see in him how i want to be like. he is what i call a hardcore genius--no hypocrisy, no illusion. You have a goal and you go for it.

there's no computer better built and efficient than the whole mac line, no phone better than the iphone, no tablet better than the ipad, no music device better than the ipod.

some may argue that apple devices are overpriced, for those i say:
-look at what Mr Jobs did. Mac airs\ipads are the biggest example. there's no competitor able to produce a computer\tablet similar to that with the same price. they can't compete with apple's price. result? competitors will provide a computer\tablet with much lower quality hardware or much lower quality construction materials. even if the specs are the same or for some miracle better, the computer\tablet performance will be slower because you can't beat OSX\apple hardware combo.

the same can now be applied to all mac computers and iOS devices.

it's the same to compare a great car with an enzo\carrera gt\mclaren f1. for example the viper has an 8200cc engine, but an enzo...well..you know.

microsoft can't provide the same quality since it has to provide windows even to low-end computers and android is a big joke. i have one android BTW(i am portugues and my parents earn 450 each per month. iphone4 16gb costs 600).

if you look at this that i wrote you have to respect steve. if you look at how he started, what he endure and how he accomplished it, you have to admire him.

it gets even better when you read this:

"i don't know why he (steve) even tries. he knows he can't win". gates, 98. today apple is worth more than microsoft and intel combined.

"if i could, i would buy the stocks and end the company to give the shareholders some money". michael dell, 97. today apple has more money than the US government. how's that?

In all seriousness, the guy is a force and still will be as Chairman. I hope this move is not health related but I suspect it may be.

I really like the whole Apple story. Up, then down, then way up. I like their products... extremely consumer driven.

My comments upthread are in jest. I really appreciate business success stories, big and small. To think of how Apple went from an idea to where it is today... how many people work for, or have worked for and retired from this company... how many investors have had their retirement or investment accounts bouyed by this company... not to mention how many consumers have been touched by a host of outstanding products. Companies have been formed and are flourishing just making accessories for Apple products... along with the jobs that are created, etc.

Jobs is a success on a very grand scale and I hope he's around for a long time to come.

Great point on the jobs he created. I'm a sales manager in a giant corporation and I take every opportunity to remind my sales force that every $100k they sell keeps someone working another year.

The news from Apple keeps getting worse. Not only is Jobs resigning, but:

Here are five things about Apple's new leader, who reportedly favors Nikes (he's on the sportswear company's board) as his dress shoe of choice:

2. He's a big fan of Lance Armstrong's
One of Cook's heroes is seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, whom he reportedly enjoys quoting during Apple staff meetings. There are even rumors that Cook's closely cropped coif is based on Armstrong's cut.

LA an inspiration at Apple meetings? Please, say it ain't so. I guess Polish would now list the iPod as one of LA's contributions???

It would be fun to be at some of those meetings when, if, the indictments come down.

P.S. - I have a Macbook Air, and while there's a lot to love about it (it boots up in just fifteen seconds flat), it is over-priced. And comes with no modem port. There is an adaptor for that, but the cheapskates at Apple make you pay extra for that. There really is no excuse for that, given that the Air costs 3-4 times what comparable PC netbooks cost.

maybe you don't know what you are saying, however the bolded part makes you look really ignorant. most likely you don't now what you bought and you are not informed about the fact that there isn't a single company capable of doing a computer with similar quality without it being much more expensive than the air. you should inform yourself better before saying something like that. the air is a masterpiece at every level.

but the other part.. oh boy.
tim cook, you are a genius but i don't know if i can forgive that.

Too much use of the word Genius. Tim Cook is not a genius. He is a very hard working and bright person...not a genius.

I hope Steve Jobs will be around for a long time.

thanks to tim apple has the best prices in the market even with the 30% profit margin. let's see what he is made of :)

about jobs.. he already did what he had to do. that company has enough talent. he built apple from the bottom and not from the top.
we are not talking about a incompetent that says that smartphones and tablets are a joke aka steve balmer. as far as i know tim as a really big and amazing curriculum even before joining apple.

Ouch. I should probably hand in my MacBookPro, my iMac, the iPhone, iPod and whatnot.

About your Air, what c&cfan said. It is a product far ahead of its time designed with weight and size in mind. Hence no clunky ports etc. If that's not what you want, you bought the wrong Apple product and should have gotten the MacBook instead.
