Stomach bugs

If a sportsperson quits because of a "stomach bug" there should be a mandatory drug test. In other sports such problems usualloy indicate they have not been able to flush their system. If it is a bug nothing to fear is there?

Its all in the Handbook to cycling doping - Tyler's book. Stomach bug is a cover for something else. Wiggins and co, you have a different audience. We are quite informed. I have always been amazed at the number of stomach bugs and toothache excuses. It didn't add up. First professionals watch what they eat, second these pros can afford the first dentists in the world, Tyler's book connected the dots. They need to come up with new excuses, like "eye infection" or "brain strain" or bike malfunction"....chuckle

To me "stomach bug" usually sounds like "I'd rather be somewhere else so I'll make something up". "Bad blood bag" is always a possibility in this sport of ours*. "Actual stomach bug" too.

*not likely in this particular case

I thought the "sore knee" excuse was better for the "I'd rather be somewhere else" rider. Difficult to verify and no hint of doping possibilities.

Cyclists are particularly exposed to any kind of bugs as they ride their bikes in extreme heat (or cold) for several hours every day and consume loads of energy gels etc. The autoimmune system is obviously weakened during such circumstances...

I've occasionally gotten stomach bugs during bike races as well. Maybe I'm a doper?

After the adventures of Christophe Kern and Europcar at large, I associate "knee problems" with corticosteroids. :D

iirc, when PDM left the tour in 1991, the first official explanation of the team doc was that whole team had suffered a stomach bug (Dutch "buikgriep", lit. 'stomach flu').

Wiggins Stomach Bug

Porter and Hayles mentioned some drinking and partying going on in the hotel bar on Wenesday night.....anyone else hear that ??

If so - then Cav and Wiggins were hungover....not good for anyone to know either - just shows they dont give a t*ss....so it could be an innocent explanation.

I remember reading in Coyle's book about Wonderboy that the riders jokingly referred to the road grime sprayed up by riding in the rain as "belgium toothpaste". Road dirt, oil, and sh!t from agricultural runoff. Nasty! I know that I have used one water bottle stream to wash off the other so I could drink from it. It isn't hard to imagine that these guys are on the razor's edge with sickness. That is actually one of the things that IS amazing about Armstrong: he was never sick during those 7 three week tours.

So Hayles is attached to Sky? Or Eurosport commentator?

Hayles TRAINS Cavendish. So yeh course he is a SKY toy....oops I meant boy.

Not actually attached to Sky. He does work with Cavendish, but isn't a Sky employee.

For the ToB he is co-commentating on ITV4.

Sky were up at a pub on Tuesday I think - the Strickland Arms - handing over a yellow jersey the pub won in a competition. Wiggins was there. I wasn't so can't say if they were drinking.

When Wiggins was dropped yesterday, he spoke to the moto camera and said he had something dodgy or too much for his brekkie

Does anyone give a t*ss about the Tour of Britain? It's a wretched, crappy little race. I can't blame Cav & Wiggo for not bothering.

well yeh you have a point - awful roads, freezing weather (poor liquigas must hate it)......but the likes of Cavendish and Wiggins would be poverty stricken if it wasnt for the fans and Sky tv audience...so yeh they owe them at least 5 days when they can forego their warm weathers of europe and Tenerife  and ride for them.

Wiggins just like Cav is a back street barrow boy made good and now he thinks he's top sh*t. Ridin along thinking he's above this Tour.

The chickens will come home to roost Brad and Mark - ask Lance :)

ToB isn't too bad. Shame the tv commentary is a load of pants. Could do with a decent commentator, Carlton Kirby maybe

I've read for years that elite-level athletes have weakened immune systems from the stress of racing, and the traveling, etc. --is there any proof of this? I think it likely that the opposite is true, and that they would have stronger immune systems than the average schmuck --but I've seen no research.
I can appreciate the fact that they are exposed to germs in ways non-athletes aren't.

As always any research always concludes with the mantra "further research is needed". But the general opinion is that endurance athletes tend to suffer with upper respiratory tract infections and occasionally Gastrointestinal problems.

This issue has been raised before. I think the same reasons were flung out like the cattle doo-doo shooting from the animals backside during P-R, LBL, etc. I have always felt that if these guys are supposed to be "hard men" as they are often referred as, they should be able to manage a stomach bug. It appears these "hard men" are in truth a bunch of daisies.:D

Thanks for the link. About what I thought.
I think they would get sick much more often, if they had weakened immune systems, given the assault by pathogens and other junk they experience daily. I wonder if it's worse than taking a train to an office job, breathing recirculated air all day, and eating lunch in a restaurant.
Too many variables, IMNVHO ;)

I dont know if some of the arguments put up are real or not.....seriously.

The cow pats are giving riders stomach bugs....really truly. Farmers and country people must have a much higher incidence of stomach bugs then the rest of the population so, a terribly sick bunch.

The restaurant eating, the chefs handling utensils and the washing cycle not hot enough...The places they are eating are cleaner then the average kitchen, yes some instances but as one of the main reasons they get sick, thats just a slight on the kitchens and the people working in them.

People get sick, thats the main reason a proportion of the riders get sick. A doping thread on why riders get stomach upsets is scraping the barrel a bit dont you think ?
