Rui Costa was there, the most annoying (or clever) rider to have in any sort of group. People blame the Jumbo guys, probably rightly so, but at least they tried a few times. Rui Costa was the one out there protecting the gap for Pidcock.
While that’s true, if Jumbo just picked a leader and had the other rider work for them, they would’ve caught Pidcock. And it turns out they were both faster than Costa up the last climb, so they would’ve been in a really good position to win. You can’t let one guy being a nuisance ruin a numerical advantage like that.

Yeah, but Rui Costa is the kind of guy who might be playing possum, only to drop you on the last climb. Still, when you have numbers in a group you have to work.

True, and Benoot's annoyance with Valter was quite obvious, but Valter looked to me a bit over-enthusiastic, his first WT race for Jumbo and really wanting to leave an impression. Also, Benoot didn't win the sprint, although he was surprisingly close given his total lack of explosiveness.

great race with the result up in the air until 2k to go or so. i really had no idea who would win with 20, 10k to go. i think everyone in that 2nd group was just destroyed and couldn't commit to a chase because they didnt have the legs. except rui costa, he's a tool, hope he enjoys his 4th place.

For a guy on the comeback trail who's already won 3 races this year it was especially lame.

Rui Costa racing negatively with good legs, meant that Valter should have sacrificed himself for Benoot and just go as hard at the front to pull them within striking distance of Pidcock.

Why?

Rui Costa has always been a complete leech of a rider.

Which is why he has better palmares than his raw physical ability would suggest!

He wasn’t the strongest in the group, another team had two guys there, his actual best chance was to leech.

Magnus jumping on everything in the peloton.

I thought his crash was going to cost Ineos
Madouas 2nd today, podiumed Flanders, reminder that he was also there on the Granon helping Gaudu the day Pogacar cracked, FDJ have some exceptional young talent.

Remember that he crashed at a key section of the race too. Brilliant ride from Madouas today.
