He spoke about that at length in some Danish interview a while back.

He started his career winning a lot, but then became a star GT domestique, first for the Schlecks, then for Nibali, so he rarely got chances to ride for himself, for years on end, he was always in the service of someone else.

He said he kinda lost the instinct for winning, but with his silver at the Rio Olympics, something clicked in his brain, and he started riding in a different way from then on.
