Guys! Guys! Guys!

What does p-a-k-i mean?

Just... tell me what langauge it is... then I can just use Google Translate...

The first few letters of Packistan (sic). A derogatory term used usually by lowlife council house dwellers and other rubbish that frequent this place.

interestingly, although you cant mention the country just north of india, i have just referred to Patrick McQuaid as Paddy.

A paddy also being a derogatory and racist term used by some members of english society to describe an irishman.

Yeah, if you can't get a more "intelligent", context-sensitive swear filter, get rid of it altogether and rely on your moderators.
Oh sure, like being a mod here is easy work and we don't have our hands full already.

I think its about time we were allowed to discuss Dick Van Dyke as well. the guys a legend.

And in the cat thread, I cant mention my pussy cat :( or say that a rider has a chink in his armour. And we cant post any spoof videos.
Sure you can, you just did. Just about anyone with an IQ over about 80 can figure out how to get around the filters. Do so in a reasonable manner, as in your example, and none of the mods are going to care, even if we notice.

I can tell you what we're not going to do, and that is get rid of the filters. This is considered a website to be accessible by anyone, even kids. Not to mention what Benotti said about advertisers. So, nada, no change.

Why don't you try using a sensible filter?

It is clear that the software can differentiate between whole words and fragments. So I can write assess but cannot write ass. It is clear that the person who came up with the list of words is completely incompetent. Hence Pak!stan is filtered. And who is going to be offended by the word butt. You cannot even discuss saddle issues here without trying to figure out which synonym for butt remains unfiltered.

I'm not saying it is. 'Rely on your moderators' was the second clause in a conditional sentence, the important bit being 'if you can't get a more "intelligent", context-sensitive swear filter', which most people here think would be a good enough solution.

And anyway, it's not like mods are getting paid, is it? CN should get more mods if you're overstretched.

i think i may have found a way to solve the word filter problem. who ever is in charge of the vbulletin software needs to go into the list and remove all of the commas. according to what i read this will mean only exact words will be filtered not parts of words.

The word *****en (female dog). Growing up here in California, the surfer term was so accepted that some gnarly dudes would use it in prayer...We give thanks for all this *****en food.
The filter hampers a comeback of this harmless and uniquely Californian usage...what a bummer...a real wipe-out.

You're spelling it wrong ;) bietchen You probably are missing out on a few 420's, so I understand your misspelling.

That would solve 99% of the problems, yes. It could be exploited by people typing stuff like abso****inglutely or whatever, but on the other hand we'd be able to refer to **** Pound and S****horpe.

Not spelling...it's the damn phonetics again. Let's try this: bichen, as in...
That babe and the bike is sooooooooooo bichen.
There, problem solved in pure Californian...totally.

+1 to the requests to sort the filter out a bit. There are a lot of references being made to **** Pound at the moment and parsing the asterisks gives me a headache. It's the guy's NAME fer crying out loud.

I beg to differ from some of the comments. True, curse words are used daily by persons in general, however, a working person (like myself) doesn't hear it all day long in every sentence or two (unless you're a sailor???), so I don't see a comparison with the Forum. What I mean is, some of the threads are so filled with asterisks and creative ways of expressing the words, so that they don't get filtered, that once I stopped reading the Forum altogether for a while before coming back, and sometimes I'm tempted to leave again. Meanwhile, I've developed a way to read the comments.

I'm not an emotionally uptight *** who lives in a fantasy world though. I'm glad for the filter and I don't think the filter is offensive. Just sayin'.

Certainly the f word and a few others of equal status are going to be censored.

But really....d1ck? Aside from being someone's name it's only a silly insult, it isn't reeeaaally offensive is it?
It's up there with poopy pants for heaven's sake. Back in my moderating days (not here) I would use the filter.... let's just say, differently.

d1ck = Richard
a$$hole = icehole

etc

D**k doesn't go, but ****, huge ****, great big 'ole ****, ****, ****, ****...all perfectly fine. Strange. I am betting my days of being able to type in "****" and not have it show up as **** are numbered.
