Swear filter problem

I posted in the 9/11 thread in the General section, and typed in ****stan (Pakstan swear filter coming in the way) in a way which was hardly offensive politically or racially (I'm Indian by the way) and the first four letters are *ed. It may be deemed as offensive by many.

I know the the first four letters alone comprises a swear word but with the stan added to it, it should not be offensive

Yeah, if you can't get a more "intelligent", context-sensitive swear filter, get rid of it altogether and rely on your moderators. It's just silly that we can't say ****stan or talk about bast*rds in a historical context or when referring to Mikel Nieve.

The swear filter is one of the stupidest inventions ever, designed for the permanently offended, up-tight puritans and emotional retards who live in an 'I love Lucy' 1950's style fantasy world.

What is hilarious is that it is so completely self defeating and actually makes things more offensive by rendering everything taboo.

More to the point with such a blanket approach it makes any word deemed to be offensive into the the most offensive word as no distinction is made.

For example.

Cadel Evans is a ****

Cadel Evans is a ****

First example - a tame word that someone has deemed to be offensive (here's a clue, its the short version of Richard).

Second example - an old english word that some people consider to be one of the most offensive words.

With no distinction being obvious, what is a a fairly mild comment automatically appears to be the most offensive comment.

Paradoxically, by starring words and making them taboo, the censors actually make the words more powerful and effective.

+1. The swear filter is stupid, and it's kind of offensive to **** out the actual name of a country. If we can't overhaul the whole filter, at least change the banned list so that particular word is allowed, and let the mods sanction anybody obnoxious enough to use it as a racial slur.

Totally agree.

it is simple. it is there not to offend any advertisers or possible future advertisers, which is sad because advertising is the job of professional lying and mistruths. i know my father worked his whole working life in the business and my sister got sucked into it too.

so i doubt it will change when a place like CN relies on its advertisers.

I do think it is stupid as it common parlance nowadays to hear swearing in public and everyday life.

I think its about time we were allowed to discuss Dick Van Dyke as well. the guys a legend.

And in the cat thread, I cant mention my pussy cat :( or say that a rider has a chink in his armour. And we cant post any spoof videos

but seriously, i think the pak-istan one should be removed. I very much doubt anyone would use it as term of offence and if they did it would be quickly reported and the user dealt with, and di-ck needs removing from the filter.

I would posit that the word "****stan" comes up so rarely in the cycling context as to be meaningless. A correct linguistic rendition would be more like "paakystaan"... long "a" short "i". Filter away, I say! I wonder what happens to the word "fanny pack" which has quite different meanings in the uS and Oz?

Nicely done TSF! :D

Would you like to come over to my place for some spotted dick?

I had the same a while back with my old chum D!ck Pound.

Back in the old days when clients insisted we put a swear filter on their web forms, we found that many of the swear dictionaries out there were overzealous, outdated and/or targeted at the disgraceful timbre of a particular locale. Cretins that we were, we used to spend our coffee breaks thinking up words to "beef up" the filter.

FERFUCKSAKE! fix the word filter, or better yet, get rid of this patronising "tool".

rip:30 tried to upload a gif of a wankel rotary engine to the chaos thread, but the word filter blotted out the letters w a n k.

goddam, it's frustrating:mad:

Clear sign of a payoff from Dick Pound.

I thought 'P-aki' was only a naughty word in the UK, it's certainly not in Australia, or people don't seem care whether it is or not because 'this is Australia and not England'.
