Pogi messed up his sprint, not that he had a chance anyway. You have to stay on MVDP's wheel. Or he should've attacked at like 600 to go.
He tried to surprise them, which was not a bad attempt. He wasnt beating any of these on acceleration and he got MVDP to sprint from far out.

However, MVDP was super-strong in that sprint from 250m out and you gotta hand it to him.

There is no way Pog wins this sprint in any other way than either surprising them coming with a lot of speed from behind... or making the sprint super-long and the others run out of gas. Succeeding with any of it are slim vs the caliber and sprinting ability of MVDP and Ganna here. He tried though.

Great race and three champions fought it out.

one man missing on cipressa, pog is a monster, don't be fooled by the victory of mvdp, pogi was way stronger, I have no idea how he could do all those efforts with his nose in the wind and that wheel sucker behind him. I'm quite convinced that the crash in sb took that 0.5% out of him that today would have come in handy, you could see that in the last part of poggio he was on the limit. I have already heard comments that mvdp was stronger today, which is not the case, you have no idea what it means to have your nose in the wind for half cipressa and almost all the poggio with those shallow gradients and high speed
Pogi looked a bit uncomfortable on the bike right before the poggio. He normally isn’t shaking out his legs and standing up.

Exactly, it is obvious Pogacar was stronger. Draft is massive there and MVP didn't help Pogacar at all.

Review positions again at the base of the cipressa. I’m too bent to do it at this moment. I’m sure mvp and ganna are in the top 10 or less

Del Torro completely useless. Why were you in this race, my friend?
Like I said, they don't need a lot of climbers. They just need powerhorses!
Vermeersch was the missing teammate today. They just need Wellens and Narvaez to kill Cipressa.

Another tactical error was driving downhill after the poggio. If he would have let ganna on ganna might have put the necessary pressure on mvp on the flat.
I think the race was lost for him when Van der Poel was still in his wheel halfway the Poggio. There's basically nothing to do from there tactically. He's the strongest in the race, yet at the same time he cannot brute force a win because he's not explosive enough.

I also think his sprint got found out today. Like, Ganna has about 20s when they come back to recover from going fully on the limit and he still beats Pogacar in a long sprint.

And drafting plays a big part on Poggio.

Pogacar always had a overrated sprint, even Vingegaard beat him in a sprint during the Tour France, and Vingegaard is probably one of the worst sprinters in the world.

Paradigms have shifted. Vingegaard has an okay sprint for a 58kg climber, and in the days of Contador and Froome he would be considered to have a decent finish on him for a top climber.

Teams rarely (if ever get) all guys in perfect position when the entire peleton is fighting for it. UAE did a pretty good job on Cipressa. Honestly not sure how they can make the race even harder. If Pog is all in on winning MSR he just needs to get lucky. He will be among the top 3-5 over the Poggio every single time. Now he also has the Cipressa option.

I’m a sucker for punishment. There was a crash. Cameras never see any of what happens in the bottleneck. MVP came out if it like in 5th position and ganna maybe 2 places behind him at all times. They drafted behind wellens when he got to the front and just waited for pogi to burn watts to get back to the front

MVDP made a great sprint, not really a "smart" sprint. Strong sprint.
He started his sprint in the perfect moment. Ganna wasn't ready. Pog was too far behind trying to come out of Ganna's slipstream.
In my opinion that doesn't change the outcome. It was a smart sprint. And looking at the gap he created also a really strong sprint. Produced by far the best numbers.
