Escaping alone on Poggio is difficult but being in a small group is already a chance for Tadej to win, he is fast even against classic riders. Sprinters like Ewan can be a problem but maybe the UAE team will make the tempo hard on earlier climbs to tire out sprinters before Poggio. Tadej's presence adds new dynamics to the race, who knows what he will try.

Instead of upping the tempo before the climb, Jumbo and UAE should slow it down to a crawl before a climb on the front, then launch the climbers at the bottom. No sprinter would survive a change of tempo like that.

I'd say fairly sure.
Everybody knows where the Poggio starts and ends. I'd need to see the map to be 100% sure though.
Makes sense.

In race is not entirely different from a motor pace Poggio but the pace in the peloton is often way slower waiting for the one 8% ramp.

I do think going from the bottom makes spne sensr for Pog if the rest of the favorites are positioned poorly. The switchbacks on Poggio require breaking so its no drawback to take those alone

How sure are we the Strava segment is correct?
How sure are we that Pog is going to bludgeon the opposition on the Poggio? Who's going to stay with him? Ala is out and we needed a fully in-form Ala for this debacle.

I'd say WVA and Pidcock have a chance.
WvA maybe...but not Pidcock. Pidcock's form has fallen way off since winning the CX World Championship. The same thing happened to him after winning the MTB XC Olympic Gold medal last year. He has the potential for a big peak but he isn't able to hold it for long.

however, they did it after 300kms...LOL! And neither of them were ever close to Pog's league. gives you a sense of how effed up those days were... ;-)

If you watch footage from MSR in the 90's you will be surprised to see a veritable army of motos in front of the riders. So there's likely to also have been some drafting involved.
