The only climb where Pog went hard was stage 4. Vingegaard survived but if you watch him after the stage he was breathing like a fish on land.
On the next day he suffered in the TT.
All these classic high speed stages are ruining Vingegaard 's legs.
The real test will be Stage 12.
Pog normally won't move on Stage 10.
Vingegaard was completely cooked for sure. I wouldn't be surprised Pogacar was testing Vingegaard to know his true level.

This doesn't tell us anything. Were you expecting him to say this first week was easy?
Yes, actually, as an explainer for his power sap in the ITT for example. And it keeps getting harder with each subsequent stage.

All Visma does is positive affirmation in literally everything they say to the press and from team car communications the public has access to. Any deviation from this narrative is most likely truth.

In the TT they were panicing.

Telling Vinge that he need to go faster after ”only” being 14 seconds in the beginning.

So they were worried and he had a rough one.

2022 had a very hard first week too (stages similar to classics) and he was strong after.
In 2022 and 2023 he was a better climber than Pogacar.
My point is that Visma are hurting Jonas more than Pogacar with the '' Scorched Earth strategy'' on these classic stages.
They can pace hard like devils on the high mountains where Vingegaard's lower weight is an advantage.
But on these flat stages they are cooking his legs.

In 2022 I agree. In 2023, I don't. Pogacar didn't prepare the Tour conveniently, specially the TT (he didn't recon). For multiple times he dropped Vingegaard.

It's actually quite funny that the only kind of effort in which Jonas has been consistently capable to stick to Pogs wheel since last year, are the ones still perceived as his weakness.
It’s not a weakness for him as he would be regarded as an elite puncheur were it not for his other attributes.

Zero doubt in my mind that Jonas would podium Flèche Wallone if he rode it.

Vingo had a not so good record in classics and semi classics before jumbo converted him into a July faberge egg.

He does look like he’s done something these days that could prove useful in one day races

You need to practise to be good there.

What Pogacar did this spring is nothing short of science fiction.
He attacked on Colle Pinzuto at Strade Bianche, On Cipressa, he did something that hasn’t been done in over 50 years. On the Kwaremont, he straight-up broke MVDP in his own playground. At Amstel Gold, he went easily on the Keutenberg, Then at Liège, he nuked everyone on La Redoute, and at Flèche Wallonne he casually dropped the whole field on the Mur de Huy, a climb usually reserved for pure punchers.
Meanwhile, Vingegaard was twice outsprinted by Almeida and only won the Volta ao Algarve because of the time trial. That’s basically it for his spring.

When you read through what Pogacar has done this year, it’s honestly insane that anyone would even doubt him, unless we’re talking about injury or illness. It seems like he’s treating the first 12 days of the Tour as just staying out of trouble. He hasn’t attacked yet, just riding within himself and saving energy. He knows that the only place where Jonas can really challenge him is on the long climbs, and maybe he’s even deliberately dropped some explosiveness because even at 80%, he’s still better than almost everyone maybe with the exception of MVDP.
Massive respect to Vingegaard, he’s a monster on the long mountain stages but I honestly think it’ll play out just like after the Dauphiné: Pogacar dominating once the real climbs begin.

Agreed, I think Jonas would podium a lot of one-day races if he decided to participate. But I get the sense that he's a family guy would would rather train close to home than spend so much time away. And that is very, very admirable.
Jonas only gets away with his schedule cause he's their golden goose. Dno whats so admirable about ignoring a big part of the calender.

Testing Jonas or not, Visma has made it easier for Pogacar by setting up the aggression that forced Jonas to be vigilant. His stress level was probably off the charts where Tadej just had to keep an eye on him and get his team to set up any moves he chose to make. That miscalculation is coming back to bite a bit.
Going from today they have to decide to attempt recovery for mountain stages to come or keep banging the same drum. As with Roglic; stage 10 may make the future decisions for them if Pogacar wants to really distance the weaker contenders.
Good for Tadej to go into the rest day with an even bigger buffer and choice of upcoming stages to highlight. JV would be forced into creative mode. They've shown diminishing skill with that planning to date.
