I don’t think that’s what they had in mind when they said pogi should let some other riders win
Wellens' victory is half thanks to Visma.

First, Campenaerts and Van Aert insisted on breaking away after the crash. At the time, Wellens was with Pogacar, but seeing the insistence of those riders, Pogacar told him to go to the break.

Then, Campenaerts seemed to be Wellens's domestique when Storer attacked and Campenaerts pulled with Wellens at his wheel the entire climb

I sense problems at Visma.. I don't think they are on the same page about the direction
Today, Campenaerts seemed to be in Lotto with Wellens. I've mentioned it throughout the stage: when Storer attacks, Wellens is the one who suffered the most, and he came back thanks to Campenaerts. He didn't ask for a single relay.

It was also strange when, after the crash, Vingegaard stayed behind, and three Visma riders insisted on pushing ahead. That's when Pogacar told Wellens to go with them because Wellens and Pogacar were stopping but Visma riders no.

By the way, Wellens had a rest day yesterday, and Campenaerts rode the final climb with the group. They weren't very clever there. If Visma wanted today's stage, they should have given Campenaerts a rest day yesterday, as he's not a mountain domestique.

Just saw a interview where Pogacar basically said: ''I was Jonas best and only helper today''
Haha
Ironically Visma really caused Wellens' victory.

Pogacar said they were going to let the breakaway go today, they weren't going involved in the break, but seeing Visma insisting and him waiting, he gave Wellens permission to try.

Without that situation, no UAE would´ve go into a break. Campanaerts was also Wellens' best domestique.

Wellens is the UAE's best signing for Pogacar.
It's a shame he wasn't lucky in the classics with the accidents.

Ayuso and other young riders are good signings, but for them as a team. For Pogacar, it's definitely Wellens, a complete rider and a great person, everyone says so.

Today's stage reminded me of the one he won in the Giro and Vuelta. They were like that. He won a similar stage in the 2020 Vuelta.
He fought the stage because Pogacar gave him permission. Wellens is one of those cyclists who Pogacar knows will always prioritize helping him.

Matteo isn't a worldclass climber. Where did he try to follow Pogacar?
I don't think it will result but Visma need to try something.
Matteo isn't a match for Pogacar and IMO may never get there. He is very strong but it doesn't equal the jumpiness of Tadej and some others. That's also the issue for Jonas, now. Tadej can do a quick jump and press the issue for a km. Jonas responds and Tadej simply does it again when he almost closes the gap. If there is hope it's that sort of tactic won't work on Ventoux if there is a headwind. Both guys may be sidelined until Stage 18 by conditions neither can overcome except maybe the last km.
It seems like a torture fest for the riders and the fans.
