Can someone please start a Pogacar v Mercx thread and then I don't have to keep reading this argument going round in circles?
No, thread's name should change!
Poggenheimer, the second coming of Merckx!
Just joking mate, maybe you are right however I see Merckx even on Remco's thread so I don't think it will work.

It's not that I think we should never discuss Merckx here, it's just that we've now had about 3 days of the same circular argument being played out.

Probably a waste of time anyway, we all know there is Coppi, Bart, Eddy at the top.
Then Anquetil and Hinault
Pogacar and Lemond currently are around equal on that third tier

We're talking about different eras, different times for entering the sport, before it's globalization, etc. You can't compare an Arab financed team in the global market with no card to play nationally supporting an ace, with nationalistic oriented teams allowing a foreigner on from a nation without pedigree, whilst having it's own super cards to play. The development would inevitably be skewed, the focus on riders biased, etc.

Showing signs of burn out. His legs might have gone next year

we can guess he'll have a long talk with the management during the winter (also waiting for what happens at the Vuelta with Ayuso and Almeida)
he'll go again for Sanremo and Roubaix, and I think he doesn't want to do the Tour

Do you think he’ll be pressured in to it anyway? You would think if you were in shoes you would try get the 5th tour while the going is good, strange really.

He's already confirmed he'll be riding in next year's Tour.

And he obviously wants to be part of those who've won five.
From there, we'll see, but he'll be doing the Tour next year. He's already confirmed that.

Neither Ayuso nor Almeida have a chance at the Tour. Besides, what happens at the Vuelta has never been decisive for the Tour. Pogacar will remain the undisputed leader of the UAE for the Tour; we don't have to wait until the Vuelta to see that.

Well i will like to respond about Pog but apparently I will be banned if i carry on this discussion.
I have only been respectful to other members and actually given statistics to back up my opinion. Yet one member has called me an idiot, another has just repeated the same opinion over and over without any statistics to support it.
I thought a forum is where we can discuss things like that.

It seems this forum is the Pogacar forum. You cannot say a word against his greatness.
It’s ironic when Pogacar is my favourite rider of the current generation.
I didn't call you an idiot. I said your post was silly.
You are bringing this conversation to multiple threads, we all got your point.

Pogacar couldn't shake Vingegaard but wasn't he 4 minutes ahead?
Vingegaard wasn't able to drop Pogacar after being on his wheel for 25 minutes on la Plagne.

Farmers are stronger than fishermen
In my home state marijuana is legal, but not LSD or mushrooms..
Hinault had Fignon and Lemond, I’d put them both above Vingegaard and Roglic.
Indurain is more dedatable.
There’s nothing special about the current era of riders
Sort of tough to wrap my head around that.. Pogacar is not special? Many would say that winning the TDF twice qualifies as special.. Since I am a fan boy, I think many riders in this era are special.. Fignon was a doper that makes him special.
You're throwing haymakers Charly. It's best to accept Pogacar is the finest talent in a lifetime. Not a generation, but a lifetime. note: Merckx life is still in play with this. Pogi has every ability to meet or exceed most of Merckx accomplishments short of maybe the total number of wins, which is daunting. The only thing left is time to see if any situations short of actual competition can stop him.
It's like robbing yourself of joy for no reason, just because!! Pogacar is on track to best most established records. Eddy is yelling from the mountain tops.. While you have the form..attempt the hour record!! No takers yet.. Pogacar could definitely do dedicated training for it, certainly wouldn't include multiple months of climbing as he is currently doing..
I don't understand why we can't be in the present..? Why can't Pogacar be doing something incredible.. ?
I have a general knowledge of popular American sports, including a few different types of motorcycle racing. But era to era comparisons are fun..sort of but a waste of time...sub 200cc Persimmon wood is inferior to todays technology.. Basketball, Football stats. 40yd dash times, vert leap....
If you watch retro racing, the suspension, motors, rider preparation and skill are from a different sport!!
If a desert or motocross racer from the 50s or 1960s see what people ( men and women!!) Are doing on motorcycles it would give them a heart attack.
My only point to a persistent Charly..if Eddy and Lance are amazed at what they are witnessing.. Why shouldn't us mere mortals also be astounded? If Eddy is impressed, that's good enough for me..

Is there a reason to compare these guys to Tom The Bomb Pidcock?

It seems both Pogacar & Vingegaard weren't at their best in the Alps. While Pog could afford conservative riding Vingo had to attack and didn't threaten Pogacar at all on those huge Alpine MTFs.
