This I don't really understand. If Vingegaard had done the same to Pogacar he would have been absolutely vilified on here.
Not at all given how the race situation looked and unfolded - it was Vingegaard who was on the attack given what Pogacar showed yesterday. It made total sense to ride like that and he really needed to survive this day. Then of course, he began looking for seconds himself after realizing Jonas couldnt drop him.

I think the difference is that Pogačar isn't the favourite and doesn't have the strongest team. With the way JV was riding, and after he lost a lot of time to Vingegaard yesterday, he was allowed to ride defensively until he knew he could strike.

Pogacar still doesn't give 100% confidence that he will be able to follow Vinge on Dome. If he can, madre mia, Pogi is going to win the Tour

If Pogacar has legs like today, he could follow Vinge (who had ridiculous last kms on Tourmalet). But every day is different: Pog wasn't able to follow yesterday (when he was more expected to do it) but could today (when he wasn't). Another stage comes and he could be dropped again, this is a long GT race.

I understand where you are coming from, but with Van Aert having done what he did, this kinda make it even in terms of "tactical" nastiness haha

Yes of course it made sense, just like it makes sense when Vingegaard rides smartly. But the difference in perception is interesting.

I think today just reinforces Pog was too cocky last year and paid for it responding to all the attacks, show boating, and not eating plus the weakened team. Without the crash I’d say Pog and Vinge start at closer levels this year.

Well there’s gotta be some reason for that kind of perception. Something that people feel rather than know.

Pog was the clear underdog today. JV were ready to bury him for good. They were attacking left and right. Dropped his team in a snap and tried to “murder” him by the strength of the team with Wout and Vinge.

Of course it’s a different perception than when the guy with the strongest team defends an advantage he doesn’t even have yet, waiting for his one opportunity to strike from behind.

No one can ever accuse Pog of riding defensively. He doesn’t even know how to do that. Today was about survival. And he f***kin did it!

What an amazing comeback by Pog. What morale!

He played it so well today. No crazy attacks on Tourmalet, just follow Vingegaard, let him spend energy and then a strong attack to get distance right before the less steep part where his higher absolute power comes to use.

Maybe Pog was just on a bad day yesterday. Otherwise it seems that Pog is only vunerable on double-digit gradients where drafting play a lesser roll and weight becomes a factor, and Vingegaards gets a strong lead-out. It will be interesting to see what will happen on Puy de Dome.
