Teams & Riders Tadej Pogačar discussion thread

Tadej is now a Marked Man. No more free rides and assistance from JV. Well unless Primoz decides to I guess. But he'll be gun shy now!

Tadej will need a real team around him from here on out. Hopefully UAE gets the best they can and gives him every opportunity to fulfill the Incredible talent he has displayed!

I think he has re-written the book on how "wheel sucking" with no team can win you the tour. In the coming years, I think director sportif's will be strategizing on how to break this format ? He had no UAE team train to take on Jumbo Visma, so I think this format will have to be adjusted which could lead to earlier attacks by "train teams" instead of leaving it to the 2km of summit finishes ? I honestly think Sep Kuss, Dumoulin and Van Aert could have been utilized better to attack him instead of keeping the "train format." Oh well, I guess we'll see next year ?

One of the enjoyable things about yesterday's stage was the current piece of pseudoscientific cycling dogma being exploded, namely the idea that if you're not riding at a high cadence, you will be left behind, particularly when the road tilts uphill. Pogacar had a noticeable slower cadence, compared to Roglic.

They're working on it already.
Some sources say Majka will be a new domestique for Pogs in 2021 Tour.

Newly-crowned Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar had his image projected on to the Burj Khalifa after winning the world's most famous cycling race on Sunday.

If they really came up with the strategy to go all out on the TT, because of a weak team and it would have hard to defend the jersey, making JV fall into a state of false security. They are geniuses. Creating almost an ambush on the TT. Where Roglic must have been in a state of shock hearing he was losing it all and just had no answer on the last climb.

It is not the first time he has put in a performance like that at the end of a race. Like the article mentioned on the site, he has done it before. Putting in a winning performances at the end of races. His performance on the penultimate stage of last years Vuelta is further proof of a rider that will go to the end.

Did Roglic go to deep on Col de Loze? Did he get played by Pogacar? Does Pogacar just have that much better recovery and endurance? Did he work a lot on his TT during the break this season? He was good before, but now even better. And beat Roglic in the NTT.

Pogacar looked super-strong when sprinting in the cross-wind stage. He looked like a rider that had much more to give. The next day he took back time. No one being able to follow him. He was strong in the mountain stages thereafter, took a win at the end of week 1 and another one on Grand Colombier in week 2. He didnt put in that super-attack that made everybody drop, like on stage 8 though. Did they make up a strategy on the rest day after that first week or did they plan it along to be great in the end? Did Pogacar feel "Im way better than these guys"? Who knows. It is just fun to speculate, what goes on the behind the scenes.

That he seems like a very relaxed guy that dont let pressure or expectations affect him that much has so far been an advantage. Expectations and pressure will surely increase now, he wont be an underdog anymore in the really big races. It will be more difficult to pull off these types thing, unless he really is that strong or can be compared to others at the very end.

UAE team played this very smart. A lot smarter then they get credit for. They told Slovenian press they came to this tour to win (after the race, not before it). They were analyzing all stages very closely. They analyzed stage 20 TT extremely closely so Pogačar knew the road very very well. They practised swapping bikes long long time to find the quickest way possible doing it. Pogačar was the only captain. Aru was named captain only to hide Pogačar under a radar. They knew they don't have the team do lead the race so they didn't want yellow jersey and it was really good for them that Roglič/JV allowed Pogačar to ride behind them without any problems. They fooled everyone.

Again.

Dropping on the queen stage is a strategy now.

Easy to say such things after you won the race.

Aru is nowhere near big enough to hide Pogačar, that part won't fool anyone, The result comparison between the two hardly surprised anyone.

I guess what they mean is they were careful to big him up as a potential winner, even though they might have thought he could have a pretty good shot at it. Roglic and Bernal stole much of the talk before the race. Pog was viewed as one of the contenders for the podium. I dont think people are surprised that he won, more so in the way he won. Which seems to have been a strategic plan. He was strong in the penultimate stage in the Vuelta last year, the same happened in the Tour. He seems to handle 3 weeks great. That he did it/could do it in the ITT is what shocked everyone, even though past and recent results shows he is pretty good at that too. The climb certainly suited him also.

It seems that they knew that he was a genius on a bike and there was a genius in the staff.
How come he did not defeat Roglic in the Vuelta if he was so great? Was he sandbagging in the Dauphine where he was 1 min off the pace? they didnot hire some more mountain domestiques for him for this year. they brought Kristoff to the tour for stage wins. Why did they do so if they were so confident? He lost time in the crosswind stage. Then he basically wasted energy attacking in most mountain stages ultimately getting dropped on stage 17.
if somebody wants to force fit reasons to the TT they can do that but beware that there are equally compelling reasons which show the opposite

And a pupil of Gianetti and Matxin. No further explanation is necessary.....
The way he performed the mostly flat section of 30 k, weighting 66 kg, raised my eyebrows. Normally, by doing this, groving deep into reserves, he should have fallen back in the steep climb (even if this suited him better). So, believe it or not. I don't.
