I know but this is just stupid. Cycling is the only sport that when u are the best you should just stop winning , because otherwise you are disrespectful..
Yes. What was Federer supposed to do after his 2004 season?
Every sport had guys dominating the field. This doesn't happen only in cycling.
Snooker: Hendry
Athletics: Bolt
Tennis: Federer
In these sports, I don't listen complaints about their dominance.

What? Biggest star by a huge margin in Athletics.

Well just never cared for his antics waving with the hands infront of eyes, headbobbing into the camera etc. Not to mention when he tried to go professional in football at the age of 30 or whatever claiming he would do well in United and stuff.

Guess part of it is also that he was so marketed and as someone who don't really find 9-20 second events that entertaining you couldn't really choose to avoid him even if you wanted to.

What are the supposed to say? Don't bother watching, Pogi will will 12 stages and GC by 10 minutes? Of course they're going to big up Vingegaard. FWIW I hope they're right. Not that he wins necessarily, but that he's competitive against Pogi. I also kind of think Gilbert was right too - Pogi needs to be a little bit careful how he comes across, especially if he is this dominant during the Tour. He's got a lot of residual good will from the 2023 Tour, but I don't think a re-run of 2024 is going to make him more popular with a lot of people (and especially the French public). I din't think Gilbert was saying he shouldn't win, but just remember his opponents and be careful what he says.

I say all this as a Pogacar fan, but I don't enjoy the dominant wins as much as the big fights (MSR this year being a great example).

Pogacar wasn't disrespectful. It isn't his fault he is so much better than his rivals. He goes hard in training maybe to look easy on road racing. Behind these "effortless" wins, there are hours of suffering, away from home and Gilbert as a former cyclist should know this. Or Was he cocky for making the Ardennes treble easy, even ziguezagged all the way in FW.

Yes. Federer dominated tennis for at least four years, 2004-2007. But after that he was overwhelmed by Nadal and then Djokovic.

In the end, statistically, Federer became the third best tennis player in the Open Era, behind Nadal at number two and Djokovic at number one.

History will record, if Pogi will be like Federer, then who will be Nadal and Djokovic?

I'm not saying Pogi is Federer, I'm just saying Federer dominated tennis and people did not complain like we see with Pogacar.

Yes, what about some freaks like Phelps, Jon Jones, Duplantis. There were dominant record breakers in the recent years for sure. Pogacar is now on fire, but you never know how long it will last.

I think it's normal that the fans are not that happy with dominance, especially if they are supporters of the competition. However, for any pro claiming that Pog should win less, that's completely insane. Cycling is not a "gentlemen sport" because there's so many nice guys but because of its unique property of possible collaboration between competitor. Not many sports have that and that's the prime reason why you see things like letting your opponent take the stage. Not because the guy letting others win a stage is nice but because it's a transaction. It's entirely on Pog to determine if he needs these transactions or not and it may even be a mistake from his side on the long run to be treated like a guy you shouldn't cooperate with because he won't let you take the stage (though that's not true IMO). But a pro saying he's arrogant well, they're just being manipulative....

Federer wasn’t as popular during the years when he absolutely dominated — his popularity rose with Nadal’s arrival, because their styles were diametrically opposed. His popularity increased even more because of the French Open, which he couldn’t win due to Nadal. In the end, both Federer and Nadal became even more extremely popular (especially Nadal), because people started romanticizing their rivalry in contrast to Novak’s domination.
I don’t see any current parallel in tennis to Federer — unless something happens where Pogi fails to win Paris–Roubaix or Milan–San Remo due to a new young rider who races those two Monuments defensively and regularly beats him in one of them, while Pogi no longer competes in Grand Tours but only in classics.
Van der Poel doesn’t fit into that category because he also rides in an attractive/aggressive way. Overall, Pogačar gained popularity when Jonas beat him at the Tour, especially the second time. Likewise, even people who don’t like him are still excited about Tadej at MSR or P-R, because he doesn’t win but makes the race better.

The times when someone could help another rider from another team in really important moments just because the latter let them win a previous stage or race are over. I don’t see a situation where Tadej or Jonas would find themselves in such a scenario — and even if they did, it would be extremely rare.
Despite his dominance, Tadej is quite popular in the peloton. He has a strong team that doesn’t need help from other teams to chase on the classics, and he positions himself better than anyone anyway. And if all alarms go off, he just attacks from 100 km out.
In the coming years, Tadej will gain even more respect in the peloton, because the young riders already see him as a legend and will race around him accordingly.
