That might have been true before the Netflix special, but since then he's more well known.
I have had friends who barely knew any rider outside of Armstrong, talking about the Pogacar vs Vingegaard rivalry.

To be honest I don’t have many non cycling friends who’ve heard of anyone except Armstrong, or if they have they might know a name and nothing else.

The thing with cycling is that it’ll never be a really global sport, the reason is that it’s too expensive for most to get in to.
Football you need a pair of feet and your mates football , cycling you need a bike , helmet, shoes, gloves etc.
If you can get all those things your mate probably has a better bike so you might quit before you get discovered as having some talent.
