The problem is if that Roglic will ride in a leading group and explode at the 250-kilometer against Ben Healy. A more likely scenario, while for that, they'll have to sacrifice a rider with better qualities than him for a 270-kilometer race.

We speak like fans here, with preferences. But a national coach has to do everything possible for his team to win will consider it crazy to have Pogacar in a rear group and that he doesn´t dispute the victory by giving preference to a rider with fewer victories than him in long races.

Roglic has been unlucky to be paired with someone undisputed, just as Van Aert was with Remco. A national coach is someone who has to choose the most reliable option to win, not based on desires.

Besides, Slovenia isn't Belgium; when Pogacar retires, they're less likely to have a chance. They're a team that has to try to seize the moment and go all out, like Slovakia did with Sagan. Sagan didn't have Roglic, but Sagan shouldn't have been sacrificed if there had been another Slovakian at the top level, but with less chances of winning. It's crazy to have Pogacar in a minor team like Slovenia and waste a year thinking about tactics with other riders, even if it's Roglic.

Rogla will mostly be there, that is his role, the rest the road will tell. It's not like team Slovenia can dictate on how other nations ride. In general harder other nations ride more likely for Pogi to attack on Kigali, more tactical games other nations play, more likely Rogla to suck some breakaway. Softer they all ride more likely for team Slovenia to result to numbers game near the end of the race.

So basically what should somebody do is rather pointless, as it depends on the circumstances. Each team member will cover some attacks, that is almost a certainty, beyond that it will be the rumble in the jungle.

For example Wout not going, that fact alone IMHO severely affects team Belgium, or for example a failure to bring Jonas. Here i have to hand it to Slovenian selector, bringing both. That is basically half the job done already. The other half reserved for cyclists on the road.

I mean even if Rogla said i am mostly going to holidays, who else are you going to take, as we need to take 9. So all cyclists in Slovenia are basically going and that is that.

On a more serious note of course Rogla will try to win it too, it's rainbow jersey after all, and besides Pogi won't mind if Rogla takes it, Pogi can take the TT one this year.

I honestly think the best way is simply to have Roglic do a single pull to set up Pogacar's attack and then just spend the next hour paying homage to Simon Gerrans wheelsucking the chasing group.
He can take a leaf out of the Sepp Kuss book of luxury domestique work by floating around in the lead group looking serene whilst staying away from the front not doing any actual work for his leader.
