I think they just leave the Pogacar to Vuelta question semi open. You send Almeida to Giro-Tour because you don't want to be that light on top quality support, and Del Toro can go Giro and then leave the Vuelta an open question as well.

And in no way can Almeida and Del Toro demand sole leadership in a GT on UAE.
I agree with this. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on his schedule again this year. If he comes out of the Tour similar to the way he did in 2024, I'm confident he'd ride the Vuelta. He seems to have been hugely tempted in 2024, but didn't go in order to keep his teammates happy. That's less of an issue if he doesn't ride the Giro and with Ayuso gone. I think the world championships will remain a priority, but now that he's won two in a row, it won't necessarily stop him doing the Vuelta if he finishes the Tour well.

Yeah even in the Armstrong-Ullrich era riders were taking their helmets off at the foot of the final summit climb to save weight. If i recall correctly this only came as a mandatory rule change for permanent helmets after the death of Andrei Kivilev in 2004.
I don't remember it but initially they didn't use a helmet and when itnwas mandatory, they still could take it off in MTFs.

It was mostly the heat generation from many early helmets. Those guys would sweat until they were blind during some of those summer stages. So much so it was a heat-stroke risk and hydration was primitive at best.
No ice packs....
