This team composition is strange. Very climber-oriented. They could definitely assemble a team much more suited to a Cipressa leadout.

If we could somehow assume that people at UAE know what they are doing, it could point to a plan to nuke Capo Berta and try to make a selection in the peloton there. But as the past repeatedly shows us, they have abolutely no clue and any hope of a successful attack on Cipressa shall fade very soon due to failed positioning of the UAE at the foot of Cipressa ...

And even if they do reduce the peloton on Capo Berta, I think plenty of people will return as they won't have the fire power to nuke the flat as well, so they will probably once again start Cipressa way out of position.

Very good team. They need to put a hard pace before Cipressa. Maybe reduce the peloton to 80 riders before Cipressa.

There are more teams interested in putting a hard tempo if some sprinters are gone in Berta.

Last year, they failed completely and still were able to destroy the peloton.

last year they had wellens and more importantly narvaez, we are underestimating the importance of what narvaez did last year, he's literally perfect for that effort, he has that explosivity that can create gaps even on 4-5% gradients even before pogacar attacks. Nobody on this roster can do that, the only one who might do a similar thing is del toro, but imo not as well as narvaez

Vermeersch and McNulty can both push between Capo Berta into Cipressa, but that also depend on how hard they had ridden the Capos. Ride Capos too fast and they are likely gone.

Dont really understand the fuss, either way.

Then best case scenario you have Christen and Del Toro for Cipressa.

But its not like other teams will just roll over and let them do it, give them a freeway to race exactly like they want.

Best case scenario will always be hard to execute no matter who is selected or how you play things.

Wanting to do something and being able to, is tough in this race.

It’s unbelievable to think who is selecting this roster. He has to be new to cycling. Idk what grobschartner & mcnulty are doing here. The race needs explosive type of rider who can make a 2-3 minute lead out not a diesel type of rider. Cosnefroy & Morgado are the perfect fit but the most efficient way imo is to have oliviera instead of either one to position the team for cipressa but in any case the team selection today is destined to fail

Maybe they are planning to put up the pace from Capo Berta with the diesels.

True. But for Pogacar to win, they don't just need to reduce the peloton, they need to put pretty much everyone (including MVDP) on ropes before Teddy attacks. Last year, their crucial failure was positioning.
And on Saturday, they can't do a worse job before Cipressa than 2025 MSR. I still think they will fail but it's not their fault Narvaez and Wellens had severe injuries.

about selecting people for positioning etc its not that easy for UAE since everyone and their grandma look at them and the onus is on them to make the selection and you cant do that with many big guys on ompaa loompa %.Catch 22.

Not having Narvaez is major loss for Pog trying to drop MVDP. The others don't have that punch. Yes, they can set a hard tempo but they did that last year and MVDP looked very good holding on; he looks even better this year.

Don't think any team would be interested to help UAE set a hard tempo before Cipressa.
They are better of to save their helpers in order to be close(r) after Cipressa and chase Pogacar.

I
UAE only has to pull hard a bit more than half of the flat between Berta and Cipressa because teams will start fighting for position and entrance into the climb and increase the pace then anyway

Cipressa has 4% gradients. It's very shallow for Pogacar to drop MVP (specially when MSR is so flat before Cipressa).
