Echo that. Really got himself together from around the Olympics, sorted his TT position and stepped up a couple of notches. Big fan of the guy and wonder how versatile he could be in the future. Didn't expect to see him in the final today, chapeau

Me neither! Probably due to the reports that he'd quit! But of course, they also said Chavanel had quit...

Love his comment on Twitter regarding the reported abbandon:

GVA said Phinney was to lead out Gilbert & GVA but then a gap was created and Phinney used it to power on...:rolleyes:

What's the point of leading out anybody for 7th place (which neither Gilbert nor GVA would have likely taken against Kristoff and Cav anyway)?

Absolutely correct for him to go for it himself there if possible.

Besides Phinney is probably the best sprinter of the three anyway. Odd.

That was only possible due to the lack of domestiques and motivation for a 7th place in the remaining peloton, and the slow pace in the front group. The weather was ideal for his 85kg body, too. Strong ride, but considering the circumstances not totally unexpected.

The guy earned a fan during the 2012 season and this year I'm only becoming a bigger fan.

Tony's got a couple more years of good performances in the TT's I would say, but it won't be long before we see Phinney start beating him and winning more and more TT's.

And before long it will be Phinney vs. Durbridge instead of Martin vs. Cancellara.

he rode really well today and the support in bmc team is stronger, people are spilt with he lean towards being more of a stage racer or keep his focus on time trial and winning some classics.

He has shown very little to lean toward stage racing. At 80+ kilos he also doesn't really have the build for it.

While you're at it, take time to appreciate the budding talent that is Will Routley. We've seen him locally breaking through and the NW aggressive style of racing is suiting him well. This guy will be a GC threat on a bigger stage within 2-3 years. Seriously.

The winning style is rare, long distance TT'ing, but a few can pull it off on certain parcours.

The announcers are reporting that he broke his leg in a crash descending Lookout Mountain in the USA championships.
