Well the only thing I could think of regarding positions/numbers is that four of them had previously finished on the podium before winning their first and only Tour in that year but it doesn't work with Hinault obviously so no idea.

Following up Froome19's answer, who are the only 2 riders in TdF history that managed to ride into the yellow jersey by winning on Alpe d'Huez?

I thought froome19 said it was a couple from the original list of 5 given which is why I guessed those guys. Since it's not ill just take a stab at fausto first ever mtf, otherwise I'm off to bed.

2012 Tour obviously, And almost everyone at one point or another. :p Everyone except the Brits and Sky/Wiggo fans that is. :D

Or do you mean the rider fell back asleep and didn’t make it to the start of stage, as he was curled up in bed in a deep REM sleep???

no a rider who stopped for a rest during the stage and fell asleep and didnt finish. they were coming second at the time

I heard about abd-el Qadir Zaaf, who drank too much wine and fell asleep under a tree. It was in the late 40's, early 50's.
Don't know if it was the first, though.

Emile Georget in 1903. In stage 5, he was 2 hours behind the leader and stopped to rest and fell asleep at the side of the road. No broom wagon back then.
