I'd be interested in seeing the profile of Saddleback Mountain. I've heard that there's a section of around 20% right near the top. Another good (albeit short) NSW climb is Baxter's Ridge (listed on climbbybike as Thunderbolt's Way).
In the latter days of the Commonwealth Bank Cycling Classic, they would have a stage to Nowra which would climb Jamberoo Pass followed by the north side of Cambewarra Mountain. They would then climb the south side of Cambawarra Mountain, followed by Barrengarry Mountain on the next stage.

Yeah I read it had a few km stecth where it is 20% on and off, and then the last 500m is all over 20% and brutal.

sounds like a walk in the park ;)

I think they are inviting the strong domestic teams. I think it is a great idea to promote and grow Australian cycling by having some top pro teams with the domestic teams. You don't think riders who have a PT contract aren't up and coming riders? I strongly disagree as they are still growing in their development.

Of course they are still developing but they are not up and coming talent, they've already been identified and have a PT contract. Would love to see the likes of Drapac, Genesys, FlyV, Jayco-AIS racing. There'd be a ****load more breaks happening too (like last year when UniSA got in just about every break).

baw baw is apparently pretty hard. I'm not much of a climber, and being only a casual rider I would probably die

Depending on the line up of riders I might head down to arthurs seat stage also, we can have a CN corner :p

Apparently saddleback mountain in nsw is pretty hard also, maybe craig has ridden it (I think he lives in syd).

I live in QLD.

Around here we have a lot of climbs, often steep (12%), but not that long. We have two long climbs. We have one where it goes for 11km, then is undulating for about 10km, and then it is a lot steeper for 5km. We have another climb that is about 20km, but after 10km you can make a right hand turn and have a (very) fast descent, after a small climb of less then 1km, which takes you down the other side. We have a road called Henry Roberts Drive, it's about 7km long with an average gradient of 25%. That would make the Zoncolan seem like a piece of cake.

The great thing about the Gold Coast is that there are plenty of flat and you're not that far from some solid climbing. I've easily had days where I've got more than a 1100m of climbing down.

Why are they not going to the Australian Alps? I mean not everyyear, but once in while at least:confused:

Because the tour downunder is really the tour of south Australia . a state or region of Australia.

And there are no mountains in SA - Hills, insane heat, Deserts,

I really wish the TDU could add at least 1 domestic team (proper team, on top of UniSA)

They could do it like the Giro where the highest placed finisher in the National Road Series get's the spot.

http://www.cycling.org.au/default.a...lts/20011/0,National_Road_Series/c20398/37926

With the blood passport, they won't be allowed because domestic teams aren't on the blood passport.

Also, if it wasn't protour, they wouldn't be allowed to race anyway because Turter is an **** and thinks about $$$$$ instead of domestic cycling.

Yep, if you want to feel some real heat, head out to the northern part of South Australia. it is dead flat.

One thing I do find interesting is that you never hear anyone complaining about the Tour Down Under always being in South Australia even though it is only one region of Australia yet people will complain about the Nationals always being in Ballarat. Hypocrites!

1. Victoria is better than NSW hence why you guys like Rugby League and the State of Origin.
2. Ballarat is certainly not cold during Summer.
3. Please tell me why South Australia should have the Tour Down Under just to themselves? When Down Under is reffered to as the whole of Australia and sometimes includes New Zealand?

Regaurding Q3=Your write the TDU should be riding from the top of the East Coast of Australia down to the South passing through 3 states. This gives the course designers more options regaurding terrain and climate but with Mike Turtur organizing it dont hold your breath.By the way my last post was only being cheeky write?

Sure, Blaxland, but it's South Australia's event. The state government has thrown millions at it. Unless and until NSW, Queensland and Victoria choose to do the same, it'll stay in SA.

The TDU is also much more convenient for the teams (and remember, this is basically a training race) because they can stay in the same hotel every day. If the TDU was a cruise down the east coast, the transfers would be nastier than just about any other race in the season.

It is not restricted to South Australia, it is the Tour DOWN UNDER! Down Under is not just South Australia. That is like the swiss saying we are going to not do the tour de suisse next year but have the tour de romandie as our national race even though it only encompasses one part of switzerland.

There has been talk from the Victorian State Government that the TDU could replace the Grand Prix. TDU seems a lot more economically viable and I have a strong dislike for motor sport so that go with me quite well. You don't have to go too far out of melbourne to get some decent terrain. The Dandenong ranges have got some nice climbing without being too tough.

FACT: Melbourne is the greatest city in Australia, we deserve the good sh!t.

But I understand why we don't get TDU or it spreads accross Australia.

1) Like mentioned above the transfers would be crazy.
Going from Syd to Mel alone would take 3 , 4 maybe 5 stages minimum (stages cannot be that long in the opening race, and the transfers cant be too crazy.)
2) At the same time we have events such as Aus Open going on.
3) The riders want a race which is not too complicated and easy.

YES GO MELBOURNE! I had to edit your post tho.

I guess we could take advantage of actually having climbs in Victoria so I guess we better leave it for the "backwater" Adelaide (according to our premier).

Victoria has the Herald Sun tour towards the end of the year anyway, which despite only getting a few Pro Teams, is generally a better race anyway.

Its about 3.6km 4% from the corner (where they normally finish) for 400metres, 10% for the next 1.6km then 8% for the last bit.

Hugh

i am not much of a climber but willunga hill is a very easy climb, if there are 10% sections on it then they are hardly noticable at all

the whole thing feels like about 6%

the reason the TDU is restricted to SA is because the tour down under is owned by the south australian government, not by the federal government, cycling australia, or any other national body

it really should be known as the TDSA but so be it
