Why do UCI points matter so much? What is the benefit to a team to finish 1st vs 2nd vs 5th in the points?

This is a general question about all teams but I didn't want to clog the forum with a new thread to ask this dumb question... thought a team thread would be a good place since Movistar is such a huge team.

They have certainly huge riders like Valverde and Quintana, but Movistar isn't a huge team at all budgetwise

Sky, Katusha, Astana, BMC, Bahrein-Merida all have much bigger budgets. Movistar is in the same range as Lotto-Jumbo NL.

Their four-in-a-row win in the UCI World Tour indicates something different maybe, but they simply achieved beyond their means the previous years. Movistar is victim of their own success, with the departure of Ion as best example.

Does anybody know Quintana's salary.
He earns €4,000,000 a year thanks to his new contract that runs until 2019. Look at the comparison with pay of others great GC riders :

Froome -> €5,200,000/year
Contador -> €5,000,000/year
Nibali -> €5,000,000/year
Valverde -> €3,000,000/year

Thanks.

If we compare with the others that look cheap.

Concerning Froome's pay, I have a link from sport business site (it's in French) : http://www.sportune.fr/sport-business/le-salaire-de-christopher-froome-avec-la-team-sky-147015?utm_source=Sociallymap&utm_medium=Sociallymap&utm_campaign=Sociallymap

Here you can find the source of Quintana's and Valverde's pay (Spanish site) : http://www.ciclo21.com/movistar-y-quintana-unidos-hasta-2019/

I was wrong about Nibali's salary, last year he earned €4,000,000 per year so we can suggest he will have a similary contract with Barhain-Merida : http://www.sportune.fr/sport-business/tour-de-france-2015-decouvrez-les-salaires-de-la-grande-boucle-116758/nggallery/image/vincenzo-nibali/. In the same article there is a mention of Contador's pay, in page 2

Thanks for the link, nice interview indeed. Didn't expect that from Nairito either.

Also interesting that Sutherland and Erviti reconned the first 20kms of the Formigal stage. They didn't plan an attack, but knew they had to be in front because the roads were tricky.

The pepites Soler and Sutterlin have extend their contracts till 2019.

I like both. Soler can potentially get to co-lead some on weak races or at least have free roles in some big one week races this year and hopefully will do well. Sutterlin is strong domestique, hopefully he will show something on the cobbles in a race or two - I remember him doing very well on one of the stages in Suisse (the one Gorka was in virtual) and especially well in the Eneco Tour. Both in pouring rain.

He got some promising TT-results, with a 3rd place in the TT in Eneco and 2nd in the German NC after Der Tony.

Yes, he is obviously also a great ITT talent as well. Unfortunately there isn't any TTT in either Giro nor Tour.

So.. Nuno Bico? I thought they were done with the recruiting, but its always interesting with young and new guys and you don't see Portuguese WT-riders every day in the WT. From the very little information I've gotten so far, he seems to be an allrounder, maybe with a preference for harder one day races? But the biggest question is how you can't be a pure climber coming from Viseu. :D

TDU: Jasha Sütterlin (Germany), Jose Herrada (Spain), Jesus Herrada (Spain), Carlos Barbero (Spain), Gorka Izagirre (Spain), Victor De La Parte (Spain), Carlos Betancur (Colombia).

Not bad at all. Jesus Herrada should be the favoured rider, but Barbero and Izagirre should also get their chances. Also always intriguing to see how well Betancur is doing.

Very good analysis IMO.

Where do you get Betancur from? It should be Soler.

He was announced on the Tour Down Under website.

And so it begins the Betancur saga.
