I know people usually spell Thomas Lövkvists name wrong but now his own team is even doing it.

They can't possibly do it as consistently as Rabobank's "Friere" press releases :D

Did you see them cycling outside Buckingham palace? I'd love to bomb down the mall. They did that for the Tour a couple of years back.

You can understand Wiggins' Wigan/ Man. U. comparison when you look at the Jaguars, the website, the team presentation etc. It's slick. Not to say that Garmin is unprofessional, but it's on a different scale.

Except from a grand tour perspective, Garmin will field a stronger team throughout 2010--which isn't the case with Man U/Wigan right?

Two points on the Garmin thing.

1. Vaughters was apparently desperate to sign Contador, who clearly would have been the team leader, so the idea that Garmin were 100% loyal to Wiggins and were going to do everything they could to help him, is a little off the mark.

2. Wiggins has been with British Cycling a lot longer than with Garmin - Sky are made up of the same people he has worked with for a decade - so if anything he owed Sky more loyalty.

1. I think you are vastly overstating Vaughters interest. He was interested, but he wasn't going to interfere with the contract (i.e., attempt to buy him out). His interest was only to the extent AC was a free agent--which never really happened.

2. Unless I'm mistaken, he had a contract with Garmin. So while I appreciate the point you are making here, let's not overlook the fact that he and basically walked away from his deal because he got a better one. He was only as loyal as the pounds involved.

In the US is there much of a transfer market in American Football, baseball, ice hockey etc?

In the Uk and Europe, in part due to the Bosman ruling, if you have a player under contract whose market value suddenly shoots up it can make more business sense to sell out for a big fee rather than let them go on a 'free' when their contract expires.

I can see this isnt culturally the case in cycling (although it looks like Garmin's lawyers werent going to take on Sky's over Bosman) but (although we have no £££££££ figure for it) does anyone doubt Vaughters was rewarded beyond Wiggins' market value because Sky were prepared to pay for through the nose to have a British TdF GC podium contender? In Uk/Europe it is just good business to buy and sell players who are under contract - although some aspects of this could have been done a bit more politely.

Sky get their man.
Brad goes where he wants.
Garmin gets a stack of cash.

I dont see anyone losing. Maybe Murdoch for paying over the odds. What's not to like? :)

True, I don't know who in Sky will be a climbing doestique for Wiggins. There aren't many riders in general who can give support in the really high mountains. Vandevelde won't have that much support in those situations either. Farrar could win stages, but could also be competing with Cavendish and/or Greipel in GTs. Gerrans and Boasson Hagen could well win stages too. How do you think Garmin will do in GTs this year?

Dont think so... I think EbH and Flecha will be gunning for Qatar big time..
Few more races semi-complete here, the tour squad is nearly complete, 7 of the 9 riders known pretty much

Isn't the Qatar TTT course a flat power course that they run on normal road bikes? I think this plays more into the Belgium classic's focused teams like QS

Maybe he should have gone to Rock Racing. Surely the Caddys, Lamborghinis, and girls would help him take it to a new level. ;)

I meant the big money, basically, not the glamour. I couldn't tell you what difference it would make though (apart from actually getting paid, unlike Rock).

The major American sports use trading (be it talent, prospects, or draft picks and occasionally in baseball large sums of money) as ways of moving players around in season (there is obviously also free agency in the off seasons). The American leagues are far more balanced with salary caps in 3 of the 4 major sports so their is less incentive to move a player who adds a lot to the team. I don't know what Sky dished out for Wiggo, but if it is around the $2 million I think Garmin did alright in this transaction. I have a hard time seeing Wiggins stock rise any higher then it was this year.

Talk of individual 'pods' with ipod decking stations. Maybe we can start a program called 'Pimp your team bus'.

If that is true, then I guess JV was laughing all the way to the bank.
