more fun facts:
“It’s usually very difficult to put on muscle and improve endurance, as they counteract each other in training. But Andy has improved endurance statistics and put on 3lb of lean muscle.

And how familiar does this sound:
Murray has built that enviable position around sheer, bloody determination, hard work and an extraordinary training regime that puts even his peers, in what is an intensely competitive sport, in the shade. He can maintain power, speed, endurance and strength over matches that last up to eleven hours in temperatures that, in parts of the world, hit up to 40°C.

You thought tennis couldn't get any more ridiculous, and then this:
[Venus Williams,] The 34-year-old, who suffers from Sjogren's syndrome, an auto-immune disease that can cause fatigue, was forced into a lengthy baseline battle with one of the best retrievers in the women's game.
Riiiiiiight.

I did a bit of superficial reading on Sjoegren's Syndrom.
Cortocosteroids are one of the prescription drugs to treat it.
If you really have it, no way you're gonna play the Australian Open, let alone reach the quarter finals.

The situation could have been even more hilarious if the Williams sisters were in different parts of the draw.....

lol.
if Mauresmo was once claimed to be too muscular for the women's game, then what's this?

Looks like Britain's Heather Watson has had a good winter's preparation. She puts her sudden improvement down to giving up puddings. Sounds like Djokovic's gluten free diet mark two. It's obviously unlikely that she will reach the heights he did but will still be interesting to see how she progresses.

8/1 on Nadal seems very high since he can only be beaten by Djokovic basically.

No way Federer should be favoured over Nadal to win when they are on the same side of the draw.

Ah the clinics ability to sniff out a doper in tennis, out in the first round and out well before the final:eek:

Naturally developed, her left arm should be nowhere near as developed as the right. She's right-handed for one thing so doesn't hit her forehand with the left and her backhand power comes from her strong eastern backhand grip on the racquet. The left arm/hand in the two handed backhand stroke provides guidance and control, not power.

Federer's on a different programme. His left arm development is fairly typical for a right hander playing with a single handed backhand. It's skinny by comparison, like a cyclist's almost.

Haven't seen nadal match yet.

You can take a photo of almost any tennis player when they are hitting the ball and they will look like they are on roids. Photos like that are useless. No need for them and they show nothing. Plenty of more relevant evidence

good points.
i think Federer and Nadal were about the same age here (guessing both around 24-25?):

Rafael-Nadal-Muscular-Arms.jpg

admittedly nadal is about to hit a bal there so more muscle tension, but regardless, you couldn't find any foto of federer where he shows that type of explicit musculature.

Yeah. Federer has been slightly leaner/more muscular at various points in his career but generally he has always had a very average guy sort of physique.

What happened to Nadal today? He was barely in the match. Did the drugs not work? Not running, or bothering to cover shots, that was unreal.

haven't seen it.
any indications that he may have thrown the match (for whatever reason)?

Yes, I'd agree that. Effectively, Nadal was tanking. In the first two sets it looked that way. He covered his tracks a bit in the third but still gave up on some points just letting Berdych hit the ball into empty space and not bothering to chase. Berdych, of course, possessing the mental strength of a budgerigar, nearly blew it on his own.

I think there's a bit of a sub-plot here but I doubt we'll ever be informed.

You are really ****ed up in your head. Go and do something about that.

Anyway, I laugh hard at some forumites after match with Berdych...yeah, sure, basically he was going to the final, wasn't he? Experts.

Even his right arm is not exaggerated other than the stringy sinuous muscle fibers commonly found on tennis players of old. Find some old photos of Laver and Vilas and you'll see a hammer of a left arm (both lefties) but no early greats show the enlarged opposite forearms of what you see on some players today (Nadal, Serena, Stosur, etc.)
