Wins it with a fantastic one handed backhand down the line after Djokovic was reduced to gutless defending for much of the match. Stan is a legend.

Stan just murders the ball on every shot. Good lord it's almost like Serena vs the women.

Now he can retire those god-awful shorts for the next tourney.

Can any tennis experts name a player who has undergone a more ridiculous transformation than Warwinka? The power he had when hitting the ball today was absolutely insane. This from a player who was routinely dumped out of Grand Slams in the third or fourth round until he suddenly became a top player at the age of 28.

Djokovic used to be one of the weakest physically on tour. He would frequently retire and he would usually be dead on his feet after a 5 set match in slams.

Then magically he became even fitter than Nadal over the course of a few months, and could suddenly play back to back 5 hour matches without any issues at all.

Yes, I am aware of Djokovic's history and his 'gluten free diet'. He was also Australian Open champion at the age of 20 and a five time Masters title winner who had been the third best player in the world for several years before he transformed overnight to be the best in the world at the age of 23. Absolutely no comparison to Warwinka's transformation at the age of 28.

Wawrinka never reached the same heights as Djokovic though. No way he can sustain this level of play for an entire season.

Wawrinka's physical transformation isn't that drastic. He was already hitting with a lot of power and was around the 8-16 rank in the world for several years. What improved significantly was his consistency and ability to apply himself for long durations in a match. It wasn't a clean to doper transformation that helped him, but probably a modification of his doping regime when he changed coach that improved his stamina. That meant he wasn't playing under fatigue as often, thus improving his consistency over long periods.

As for more ridiculous - Sam Stosur.

Yes, if Wawrinka goes on to be become the #1 and regularly plays at this level, his transformation will be even more incredible than Djokovic's. But he won't. He ran hot this tournament, and his peak game has been capable of beating anyone for years.

What beat Djokovic today wasn't the extreme power of Wawrinka. It was the extreme precision. His power has been better than Djokovic's, Nadal's and Murray's for years. It's that he hit 60 winners with few unforced errors and hit a lot of 200kph first serves, and most importantly, that he did that consistently. There's no data to back it up, but I bet that if you look at some matches of the past where he was beat, the avg serve and groundstroke velocities were about the same as they were today. But the shots didn't go in.

There isn't some magical drug that allows you to paint the line when otherwise the ball goes out, although reduced fatigue makes it easier to maintain concentration, which is something the big players have exploited with doping for a long time now, no one more than Djokovic and Nadal. It's luck and keeping a cool head.

What SS said, spot on.

Also if you look at Stan's losses in the past to the top players, they have (mostly) been very tight matches. When he plays with confidence, like today, no one can beat him.
Great match today, congrats to him!

Wawrinka also won the 2003 juniors French open... So he did have some skills from the get-go...

I do think though, that pure power/endurance PEDs and perhaps brain doping are very likely for any current top tennis player...
