Merckx - yes, of course. The owner of allmost all major records in cycling. :)

As the tradition of giving the KOM a polka dot jersey was not invented until 1975, this actually means that no single individual ever has been awarded both the yellow and the polka dot jersey in the same Champs Elysse winner ceremony!

Who will be the first polkadot+yellow overall winner in the foreseeable future?

Or will it never happen?

In the 2011 Giro, Contador was extremely strong, and finished first in the GC and a very close second in KOM competition - before his retroactive disqualification. So definitely, Contador could be the first to win this combo.

But -

It is unclear if he will come back as superstrong as before his doping sentence.

and

Although the Giro routes obviously are far harder (and by far much more exciting to watch IMHO) than the Tour routes, the competitor field in the Tour is usually one step tougher.

CAS on four points and second place in the KOM competition - before the extremely challenging final climb (28% maximum steepness).

Congratulations, well deserved:

This is the new top three in the KOM competition:
Froome 20 pts.
Evans 16 pts.
Wiggins 12 pts.

Tomorrow features a short stage, but with lots of KOM points spread out over the stage (in the range of 33 pts., IF i figure it right ).

The 2012 Tour de France KOM competition has been really explosif so far (stage 8)!

Until now, the polka dot jersy has passed from Mørkøv to Froome to Kersiakoff. All three have given admirable but very different performances, and have contributed to a fine first week of the 2012 Tour.

Todays winner:

The top three after stage 8:
Kersiakoff 21 pts.
Froome 20 pts.
Evans 18 pts.

Will this years KOM competition be decided by the GC favourites?:) Or will Team Sky allow a breakout enough slack to pick up lots of KOM points?:p

It wouldnt surprise one bit if this was the first yr someone did the yellow/polka dot double. At this early stage I think between Evans/Froome, with marginal advantage to Evans considering there may be at least one stage where Froome will lose contact prior to the summit due to the mountain of work hell be doing for wiggins.
