Update #34: Lead changes as Vuelta heats up

The first week of the Vuelta was a hot one, both temperature-wise and CQ-wise. Stage points were picked up by a bunch of riders that have relevance to this game, while withdrawals and crashes put a dent in the hopes of some teams for the lucrative third week when GC points are available. The GP Plouay didn't have too much impact in the game, as the podium of Kristoff/Ponzi/Navardauskus were picked by 0/2/0 teams. The real pick of the week was Esteban Chaves, who got another stage win and a bunch of points for wearing the leader's jersey. He's still 62 points behind last year's total, but the 31 teams that have him will certainly be happier this week than last. A few scorers such as Stuyven and Sagan (and Ewan to a degree as his exit was planned) provided a mixed return, as they dropped out and will miss out on points from several stages that might have suited them.

This week's top scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 MADRAZO 596
2 Nyssinator 517
3 Kjellus 516
4 Leadbelly 508
5 markene2 489

With points from Chaves, Roelandts, Stuyven and Ewan, as well as a few dozen each from Benoot, Le Bon, Haussler and Rodriguez, MADRAZO's team takes it decisively in a relatively quiet week. The top 5 is rounded out by markene2, whose team scores their first green jersey points of the year! martybart, in 6th place, also ends a long drought, having only gotten 1 point for tying for 15th early in the season.

This week's high movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 MADRAZO (+14)
2 Nyssinator (+12)
2 martybart (+12)
4 Joelsim (+9)
5 mutschi (+8)
5 rote_laterne (+8)

No surprise that similar teams make up this list, as many of the top scorers are right in the thick of things in the middle of the overall standings, where things are pretty close and you can move a fair bit in a week.

6 merengues 139
7 Schleckamagurky 139
8 will10 130
9 skidmark 129
10 afpm90 127

We have a new leader! With third place on the week, Kjellus' 30 points move their team to the top overall position in the green jersey contest. RoudeLeiw and merengues move up in the top 10 as well, with 16 and 12 points respectively this week. With markene2's team scoring, that leaves just 7 teams that haven't scored a point yet this year - I know I organize the game and so shouldn't be biased, but I'm going to be rooting for them all the way to the Tour of Taihu Lake.

I speculated a few days ago that with a good week my team could maybe move into the top spot; instead, it goes from 37 points out of the top spot to an even closer 19 points. The exciting flip-flop at the top continues, with Cykeltyven getting the most out of Chaves, which only their team had out of the top 4 overall. Londonpat drops from the top spot all the way to 4th after a pretty quiet week, whereas aside from Kjellus the rest of the top 10 is only separated by a a few points on the week. For the first time I can remember, no one moves in or out of the top 10. With the 2.1 Tour of Alberta starting tomorrow and a couple of 1.HC races on the weekend, not to mention the mountain stages of the Vuelta, this could all change by next Monday.

I forgot that it's the end of the month too! That means I should have done monthly updates. Well, since it's its own post, I'll give expanded coverage:

August top scorers

Rank Team Points this month
1 merengues 2286
2 Nyssinator 2224
3 Roubaix 2012
4 Jakob747 1940
5 Jpettersen 1938
6 Yellow Knight 1918
7 ansimi 1917
7 kabete 1917
9 AlyKaptan 1904
10 mc_mountain 1889
11 snccdcno 1888
12 Joelsim 1871
13 skidmark 1866
14 LightBing 1842
15 theyoungest 1801
15 markene2 1801
17 Roar Like A Mouse 1768
18 vernakular 1761
19 trackstand 1758
20 freshman 1728

This is merengues' hitlist from August: Wellens, 286; EBH, 225; Latour, 203; Dombrowski, 193; Benoot, 147; Alaphilippe, 140; Rodriguez, 135; Henao, 130; Cort Nielsen, 128; Miguel Lopez, 128; Caleb Ewan, 109. That's 5 neo-pros over 100 points for the month, and a bunch of other young guns (plus old man Joaquim). That group, plus a smattering of points from all but 4 riders (Porte, Gesink, Goss and Zordan all zeroes), puts merengues' team on top for the month and boosts them to 13th overall. Interestingly, only one of the top 10 overall teams was in the top 10 in August, which highlights the nature of this competition as a marathon instead of a sprint (and also highlights August's relatively light schedule). Keep a special eye on #6 for the month, Yellow Knight, as their team (I believe) is the highest ranked overall with Vuelta leader Fabio Aru.

August's top movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 Nyssinator (+39)
2 Roubaix (+28)

17 lenissart (+11)
20 Maaaaaaaarten (+10)
20 Martin (+10)
20 theyoungest (+10)
20 Jspear (+10)

Former podium finisher (2012) Nyssinator has a great month to make up for a thus-far lackluster season, moving 39 spots into the top half of the table. Roubaix and the aforementioned merengues also each move up a very respectable 28 places, and perennial overall threat mc_mountain also has a bright month in an otherwise down season. Martin and Maaaaaaaaarten interestingly tie for 20th, each moving up 10 spots.

Movement is relative to where you started on the table - watch out for these teams on the above list with some serious momentum, moved into the top 30 overall: kabete (9th overall), merengues (13th), trackstand (16th), topprak (23rd), Yellow Knight (28th, and as I mentioned, with Aru!)

oops! Pardon the delay, things got away from me as it was a long weekend and somehow I didn't process that Monday was yesterday. Well, this is my busiest week of the year so I can promise that despite a late update (within 24 hours, I promise!) I will be back on track from now on. It's a small week for points, but the high scorer was in the top 10 overall so there's some minor shakeup.

Update #35: Felline in fine form during quiet week

This week had the middle stages of the Vuelta and two 1.HC races, as well as part of the Tour of Alberta. With many of the top finishers in the HC races fairly rare picks, and with the Vuelta relaxing a bit to let breakaways take a few stages, there wasn't much in terms of points, with just 15 teams scoring more than 200 points this week, and only one team topping 300.

Rank Team Points this week
1 snccdcno 323
2 Josedin 270
3 Hugo Koblet 267

Already in the top 10 overall, snccdcno rode the relatively rare picks of Felline (5 teams) and Viviani (9 teams) to a top place, also picking up points from Rodriguez, Boswell and Cavendish. Second place Josedin had Aru, Jans and Modolo, while game founder Hugo Koblet finished third with the other big winner Dylan Groenwegen (9 teams as well) as well as Le Bon, Cav and Purito.

With the top placing this week and 45 points, snccdcno comes from 12th place to the lead of the competition! gustienordic gets 14 points to move into the top 10 as well. With 15th on the week, Hugo87 scores their team's first points of the competition, leaving only six teams pointless. Come on guys, two months to go!

9 (+2) PeterB 12753
10 (-2) greenedge 12712

For once, no change at the top after a few topsy-turvy months. But snccdcno owns the week by moving up 3 spots into a podium position overall. PeterB moves into the top 10 while karaev falls out.

Thanks for the update. Well, make that all the updates and all the work you're doing, skidmark!

I'm actually a bit surprised to find myself in 14th place, seeing that my two expensive picks didn't really work out (Talansky and especially Betancur). Also a lot of my less expensive picks haven't really turned a big profit, like Senni (176%), Ludvigsson (22%), Chevrier (90%), Schumacher (143%), Boudat (149%), Goss (15%), Elissonde (44%) etc.

I am however quite happy Groenewegen (320%) and Latour (583%).

I think it's also quite interesting that "the big 4" don't really seem to matter much this season, even though they were the most discussed before the season was kicked off. Quintana is the worst of the big 4 (95% atm but will improve a bit), then Sagan (112% but will probably improve some), then Rodriguez (113% but will improve quite a bit) and then Froome (locked at 137%).

Froome dropping out and now Purito doing so well has smashed my chances of making top 50 I think
Oh well at least I'll meet my fall back goal of better than last year (Not that it would be hard)

Well, first I would like to skidmark for his work. I am down in the GC, but I think I can still target a podium on the green jersey.... So go go

Points this week

Vuelta

Purito 375 + 60 + 7 (plus 20 of which monday or where these in last weeks)
Reuben Plaza 131
Moser 41 (25 of which on monday)
Dombrowski 20

TOB
EBH 237 (i think)
Peters + Bettiol (34 + 19)
Stannard 5

Canada
Gesink 73
F Ludvigsson 5

While it looks nice I doubt it will get me back in top 10.

Obviously the Vuelta is going to have a huge impact on this game, with a few people with top riders (Aru, Chaves, Dumoulin) and a few dozen with Rodriguez and Quintana. I was excited about my week with Purito, EBH, and Kump who got another 80 points in a 1.1 race, until I realized that Cykeltyven has all of them... and Chaves too! As we enter endgame I thought I'd do a bit of a summary of top contenders and what they've got left.

1. Cykeltyven

- Points this week: from the above mentioned riders, plus I just realized Sepulveda won a 1.1 race too! Yikes.
- Worlds/Lombardia/end of season: Purito and Gesink should contend in Lombardia, Cav and maybe EBH (as a foil for Kristoff) for the Worlds, not really sure of other riders' programmes.
- prognosis: looks great after this week but is the team strong enough to hold on until the end?

2. skidmark

- points this week: the ones I mentioned above.
- End of season: Worlds TTT and ITT, Dennis; Worlds RR Cav, Sagan, EBH, maybe Stannard; Lombardia Purito/Gesink. I'm also hopeful that someone like Hivert or Enger or McLay or something can get some points in races like Paris-Tours.
- prognosis: solid week should hold form; the difference makers will be Dennis and Sagan. Dennis should compete well in both TTT and ITT, but how is Sagan after leaving the Vuelta so early?

3. snccdcno

- this week: Purito/Viviani/EBH/Gesink/Sepulveda/De Clercq
- end of season: Purito/Cav/EBH/Gesink/Stannard. Is Boom targeting the worlds? Maybe him. And if Felline is in those Italian 1-day races coming up, he's in scorching form.
- prognosis: looking to keep pace with those above their team; but who will make a difference at the end of the season vs. other top teams?

4. GP Blanco

- this week: NO Purito. That's big. Main points from Gesink/Gougeard/De Clerq/Kump
- end of season: Sagan/Cav/Gesink/Stannard
- prognosis: took a blow with no big GC points from Vuelta; high placing will depend on Sagan and some unexpected wins from lower in the roster.

5. Kjellus

- this week: Purito/Chaves/Gesink
- end of season: Purito/Cav/Gesink/Stannard
- prognosis: no EBH or Kump for this week, and no obvious difference-makers in the end of the year. Would need a surprise from someone like Keukeleire in the Worlds, or Chaves in Lombardia if he goes, or Kung in some small races, etc.

6. Londonpat

- this week: Stybar/EBH/Gesink
- end of season: Stybar/Cav/EBH/Alaphilippe/Gesink/Stannard
- prognosis: Styby is a real threat for the worlds, for sure. Alaphilippe could surprise too. And both are unique so far among top teams, so this could provide an advantage, although again missing Purito points this week will drop.

7. kabete

- this week: Chaves/EBH/Gesink/Sepulveda
- end of season: EBH/Boom(?)/Gesink
- prognosis: again, no 375 Purito points, but doing okay. Not a strong obvious end of season team, but this team has tons of fairly rare riders (Hofland, Theuns, Teunissen, Teuns, De Buyst, Ruffoni, Groenewegen) whose programs I don't know and who could pick up some results in smaller races. A sleeper team for sure.

8. derrudi

- this week: EBH/Bakelants/Meintjes/Gesink/Van Baarle/Elissonde
- end of season: Coquard/Cav/EBH/Boom/Alaphilippe/Gesink/Stannard
- prognosis: made up this week for a lack of Purito with some relatively rare picks getting points. This will have to be the route going forward, too.

9. PeterB

- this week: Purito/Uran/Viviani/Gesink/Kump
- end of season: Purito/Uran (if he does Lombardia)/Cav/Dennis/Modolo/Gesink/Stannard/Quaade (if he repeats his worlds TT from a few years ago)
- prognosis: this is a pretty good looking team if things go right. Uran is unique and can probably score big in Lombardia - it's also not that farfetched to see him doing well in the Worlds if it's a reduced group (he's got a decent finish). If Modolo goes to the Worlds too, he could surprise and no one else in the top 10 has either of these guys.

10. greenedge

- this week: Stybar/EBH/Gesink/Kump
- end of season: Sagan/Stybar/Cav/EBH/Boom/Gesink/Stannard
- prognosis: unique and possibly fruitful combo of Sagan and Styby; this team has a lot of potential in the Worlds. Will need everything to break just right to get to the podium, but it's not impossible.

With Purito, EBH, Wellens, Kump, Gougeard and some smaller points all in my team this week was pretty good for me, probably the best week of the year for me, which has been pretty bad otherwise :)

Update #36: Vuelta points boost some, eviscerate others

Well, holy crap. The Vuelta ended, and produced the second-biggest points week in my memory (I seem to remember the TdF having a leader breaking the 2000 point barrier). But it wasn't just the Vuelta, there were Canadian WT races and the 2.HC Tour of Britain. The Vuelta ended in joy for those with Purito (and the fewer with Aru or Chaves), and resignation for those with Froome. The top ten was flipped on its head to a certain degree (some teams held course, others flipped all over the place), and the overall leader built up a fearsome buffer by getting 2nd on the week.

This week's top scorers

8 martybart 1384
9 MADRAZO 1351
10 Pentacycle 1296

After finishing in the top 10 last week, JPettersen just absolutely killed it this week. With Aru, Wellens, AND Boasson Hagen, there was a lot to celebr - what's that? Oh, their team ALSO had Adam Yates and Louis Meintjes over 100 points... AND Viviani, Barguil, Gesink, Bouet, Ruben Fernandez, Chris Anker Sorensen, Henao and Moser over 40 points??? Holy Geez. Okay, yeah, I guess that's how you get 1871 points. Also making headlines is the team in 2nd place, Cykeltyven, who was in 1st overall going into this week by a few points, and is now 1st overall by, uhhhh, almost 700 points. I mentioned in my preview that this team might not have much getting it points towards season's end, but that is a huge buffer at this point of the game. Rodriguez, Chaves and EBH anchored that lineup this week; between the 3 of them, that's 959 points. Add in 80 point wins from Sepulveda and Kump, and some points from guys like Elissonde and Visconti, and man, that's a good week. Third place arekw77 gets my vote for favourite points combo, as their team uses unique pick Majka, Aru (10 teams), Plaza (2 teams), and De Clerq (7 teams) to ride to the weekly podium.

There was, to put it lightly, some movement this week. JPettersen's mind-boggling week moves their team up 43 places into 21st overall. Cykeltyven obviously doesn't appear on this list, as there are zero places for that team to move up to.

Lots of points this week! Five out of the top ten overall got points... Jpettersen obviously rocketed up the charts with 45, but last week's winner snccdcno got 4 points for 14th to stay on top. Things are close in the closing weeks of the competition, although I note at a glance that 8 of the top 10 point getters are in the top 20 overall. Perhaps the points competition needs a little tweak next year. diggercuz's team got their first points of the season this week as well, leaving only 5 teams that haven't scored in a week yet this year. C'mon guys! You can do it.

I decided to supersize the reports for the end of the season. So, a few weeks ago there were 28 teams within 1000 points of top spot, after this week there are only 4. Though, this is partially due to Cykeltyven's rather imposing lead - less than 1000 points separate spots 2-17. It's not anyone's game anymore, but it's still far from finished. A few teams in the top have guys like Sagan and Stybar and Dennis, and with the Worlds coming up that could be worth some points, and the leader has none of them. Regardless, it's been a topsy-turvy year thus far, and it has been lots of fun. For the week, merengues rockets into the top 10, and former leader GP Blanco rockets out. Derrudi also boots greenedge out of the top 10.

Thanks for the update. I really expected to be in the top 10 this week with more than 1200 points, but others were obviously even better
At least I have reached my adjusted goal of a top 100 finish for the first time this year :p

Back into the top half at no 69. So hopefully can stay within top 75. Ive got a pretty miserable line up for the worlds I think. Rodriguez, Craddock, Anacona, Cavendish, Haussler, Gesink that I know of.

I thought I scored good this week (967 p.), with Dumoulin, Meintjes, Trentin, Wellens and Gesink.... well not even in the top 50 :p well done everybody.

Dennis (TT and TTT), Phinney (TTT), Dumoulin (TT) and Wellens (Lombardia) to score my final points this year I guess.

Well I had Chaves (and Froome) but not Purito so wasn;'t sure what to expect. Losing 10 places isn't as bad as it could have been and I'm currently in top 50% by 1 position. Hopefully I can hold on to that,
Vivianni managed to just get himself into proft which is good but was hoping for a bit more.

The big cost on my team has been Peter Velitis, not 100% sure why I included him but has done absolutely nothing this season. Kept Boy Van Poppel in as a hold over from previous years but think it might be time to drop him. Which of course will guarantee a fantastic season for him next year.

Oh boy, -14 this update.
In the end, I will be happy to finish top 50.
This edition is pretty exciting as the competition is much tougher this year, and only 500 points are separating Top 10 and Top 20.

Thanks for the update!
