Two guys into profit! Gerrans and Dayer delivering early. Gavira adding a nice bunch of points, with Contreras, Valgren and Nibali getting of the line as well. Not much, but more than I expected from those two races.

Missing Lopez might hurt as I considered him, but thought he would not have enough opportunities. His prelim. schedule looks great, though. He might be able to score big this year.

Mallorca
QUINTANA, Dayer
KWIATKOWSKI, Michal
CANCELLARA, Fabian
KUDUS, Merhawi
NERZ, Dominik
HERKLOTZ, Silvio
BAUHAUS, Phil

Marseille
VANENDERT, Jelle
VANBILSEN, Kenneth
LIETAER, Eliot

CQ spreadsheet is out, but I'm at work for about 4-5 more hours here in Canada so the update will be out after then, as I have to write it up and do some tweaking of the spreadsheet that I've been neglecting as well. Exciting January week! Top score is over 1000 points.

Re:

I scored some points in San Luis, but Gaviria has everyone and is injured now and Lopez is also pretty popular. Pelucchi didn't contest the sprint of stage 1 Tour Down Under and DNF stage 2. He seems to be out of form. And my other unpopular pick Barguil is injured before his first race.

Points this week:
Tour de San Luis (2.1)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 41
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 77
POLANC Jan 4
VALLEE Boris 0
VUILLERMOZ Alexis 18

Santos Tour Down Under (2.UWT)
PELUCCHI Matteo 0

140.

Riders probaby racing next week:

Trofeos (1.1)
HERKLOTZ Silvio
KUDUS GHEBREMEDHIN Merhawi
STYBAR Zdenek

Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (1.HC)
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian
PELUCCHI Matteo (is he really riding?)

Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise (1.1)
LATOUR Pierre

Update #2: Dayer has his day, Petit comes up big as January action heats up

While last week was a lull after the initial thrill that comes with the start of the CQ points season, this week did not disappoint with many big names and popular/unique picks making their season debuts over three continents. The CQ crown jewel was, of course, the Tour Down Under, but with many big riders eschewing that race for the more relaxed and mountainous Tour de San Luis, the points on offer for that 2.1 race are highly valued. And of course the Tropicale Amissa Bongo offered 2.1 race points for riders on French PCT teams against a thinner talent field than many 2.1 races. Uber-popular pick Simon Gerrans got an almost-expected win down under, but some relatively rare riders scored big in the other races - the younger and cheaper Quintana brother (31 teams) took San Luis, while Adrien Petit (22 teams) gave credence to the theory that Cofidis is a horrible career purgatory that has no idea how to develop or use its talent, more than tripling his points from 2015 in his first race with his new team.

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 togo95 991
2 karaev 870
3 LukasCPH 803
4 will10 797
5 The_Instigator 770

Wow! Almost 1000 points in a week in January! (*I know I teased >1000 points upthread but I was mistakenly looking at the 'season' total, oops! Close enough). Team togo95 benefitted from having all 3 GC winners on their team, plus rare pick (6 teams) and TdU podium placer Jay McCarthy, as well as the more popular Columbians Gaviria and Lopez. 2nd place team karaev had the same 3 GC winners but no McCarthy, and 3rd place team LukasCPH (which, you may recall, has no Europeans) went a different route with Gerrans, but also unique pick Sergio Henao, and some decent points from Cam Meyer, Louis Meintjes, Yukiya Arashiro and Mark Renshaw.

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 karaev (+37)
2 will10 (+35)
3 The_Instigator (+33)
4 the asian (+32)
5 Sasquatch (+30)

This early in the season there is of course a lot of jumbling around the table, and of course the entire top 5 here is in the top 7 points scorers of the week as well. Aside from karaev and will10, The Instigator, the asian and Sasquatch move up the table at this early juncture. I am not going to mention any team by name in an update for an ignominious feat, but there are certainly some teams with extremely precipitous falls this week, due to the unstable nature of the early game.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Team Points
1 togo95 1056
2 karaev 900
3 LukasCPH 893
4 will10 827
5 snccdcno 808
6 The_Instigator 800
7 the asian 795
8 JosephD 792
9 Roar Like A Mouse 777
9 Sasquatch 777

Certainly, with not many points on offer in the opening week, the overall table looks much like the weekly table. Only three teams that were in the top 10 in update 1 are in it for update 2. There will certainly be more bouncing about as the season moves on.

Speaking of which, this week switches it up in that there are several one-day races (the 4 traditional Mallorca stages, as well as the French opener GP Marseillaise and the 1-year-old Cadel race in Oz) but no stage races. Some points will be up for grabs, and then the layering of the season starts with stage races and 1-day races every week in February.

*note: I was hoping to do a green jersey and new KoM jersey update, but I realized I accidentally deleted the new tabs I had made for them, grr. They will follow later this week.

25th, two riders in profit, Gerrans and Dayer Quintana and another matching his 2015 number, Peter Velits, 5 points. So not too bad a start but overall I think my team is relatively poor and I will not finish anywhere like 25th.

Well, considering my lack of firepower, that was a good week, with Petit overperforming and Gerrans doing as expected. Lopez looks like the world-beater I think he is, too, and even Talansky looked okay before Talanskying out of the race.

Here's this week, which also looks pretty thin:

Mallorca races (startlists are contradictory but I'm going with procyclingstats)

Gianni Meersman
Jasper Stuyven
Fabian Cancellara
Merhawi Kudus
Louis Vervaeke
Silvio Herklotz
Phil Bauhaus

These races have Meersman written all over them, but everything depends on form at this time of year. Stuyven could certainly be handy here, Canc doesn't take anything serious before March, and if it was an U23 set of races it'd suit Herklotz well too. But it's not, so I don't expect much more than from the first two riders named.

Cadel Race

Just Gerrans

I'll have to hope it turns out like the TdU.

GP Marseillaise

Sondre Holst Enger
Yannick Martinez
Sylvain Chavanel

Two fast guys and an attacker - again, who knows with the early season races, but that seems like a good start. I'm eager to see how Chavanel does with the French season.

Wow.. no points from Jack Haig in January?
I though he would shine alongside Gerrans and Ewan, as Orica is known to give a space to young talents... On the other side, I thought Lopez will be a domestic for Nibali and Scarponi at Astana.
Many things seems to be turned to the oppiste as I thought.
I really have no idea how I should play this game... maybe that's why so exciting :)

I still can't believe more people picked Betancur than picked Gerrans. (I picked them both.)

Pleased to see that Trentin got the nod over Meersman who I omitted, but Fenn and Hofstetter showing they might be the kind of picks i'll regret leaving out.

Bennett with his first 48 points of the year... Great performance for Bora sprinter... If he can get another podium in the last stage he would get close to 100 points.

Couldn't have asked for a better day with Cancellara, Kwiatkowski and Kudus.

Apart fom forgetting Lopez (shouldn't have left my team selection for the last day) and Barguil's unfortunate setback, I'm pretty happy with my team.

Same here. Some nice and probably important early points for Kwiatkowski and Kudus. Cancellara in form as well.

Not having Lopez might hurt, indeed. I thought he'd be more of an helper, but so far his race program looks good for him.
